Beyond their role in ecosystems, mushrooms are emerging as key solutions for food security and plastic pollution alternatives. This World Mushroom Day, Mongabay highlights four stories showing how fungi are shaping a sustainable future. Read these mushroom stories. 👇️ mongabay.cc/xwpYte

World Mushroom Day: From food to plastic replacement
A mushroom is analogous to a flower on a plant — it’s the reproductive organ of a fungus, which protects and distributes fungal spores. Mushrooms are critical part of our ecosystems. For humans and…

‼️ Now OPEN ACCESS 🐭 People often think that, if we keep replacing animal models with NAMs, eventually we'll use fewer animals. It's why many people endorse the 3Rs. But as I argue, we also constantly come up with new animal models. There's kind of a pipeline dynamic. And it can go on indefinitely.

Programs for the “three Rs” of “replace, reduce, refine” (Russell & Burch 1959) aim to make science more compatible with animal protection. This article draws attention to a major obstacle to that end...

The majestic goliath grouper, Earth’s largest reef fish, threatened with extinction — and Florida is selling tickets to kill them. I’m posting grouper videos all week until everyone in Florida knows they can apply for a tag to save a grouper for $10 until Thursday. #MarineLife

OMG I was sorting through some old bookmarks and clicked on the Smithsonian Zoo's Cheetah Cam link which I hadn't active in a long time. It turns out they have a cheetah who just had cubs on 10/5 and they are so cute. They're on the Den 1 stream right now.

This is pretty wild... the average global sea surface temperature (outside of the polar regions) is still above 70°F (21.1°C) through the end of September. This is significantly above the prior record. We'll cover this in our October climate briefing: climatecentral-org.zoom.us/webinar/regi... 🌊
Line graph time series of daily global mean sea surface temperatures from 1982 to 2026. This year is currently at record high for this time of year. Data is from NOAA OISSTv2.1, and the graphic is created by Climate Central at https://www.climatecentral.org/climate-briefings.

Apple's New Siri Recap Turns Every Apple Watch Into a Mass Surveillance Nightmare
Apple's always-listening AI feature promises neat summaries of your daily conversations, but it forces everyone around you into a nonconsensual recording experiment.

vdttsgr 🦇 @vedettasgro.myatproto.social · 14/09/2026
apropos of privacy policy not exactly convincing / consistent
The company says it won't identify speakers by name in the conversation summary, either. Apple explains that the feature is designed to "omit potentially harmful content," such as hateful speech, and "sensitive information," such as financial data.

In a nod to privacy concerns, the company further instructs Apple Watch users to "be mindful of those around you," as some "conversations might be private or sensitive." But even if the Apple Watch successfully omits the data it intends to, it's not much of a stretch to think that the person recording can fill in those details themselves later. And the suggestion to "be mindful" seems like it's going to prevent absolutely no one from recording others.
