Some mixed news: I did not win the election for WGA Secretary-Treasurer but I did win the estate sale auction for Larry King's 1988 Cable Ace Award for Best Talk Show.

I have no idea how many people this will reach, but Van has always been a solid #WGA choice. If you have any say in the election process, please consider him. He legitimately cares about writers and the industry as a whole.

The 2023 WGA Strike was a difficult experience for all members, but also marked a high point in member solidarity & guild communication. When the strike ended, that communication stopped completely—and as a result, I’ve watched us grow more disconnected & allow our hard-earned solidarity to wither.

The Mission Impossible 5D Optical Data Drive sounds silly but for what it’s worth, that’s the real name for a real storage technology.
Screen grab of Mission Impossible Final Reckoning. Willaim Doneloe holds a glowing cuboid and looks at it. Subtitles show him say “It’s a 5D optical data drive.”

Fellow WGA members: I thoroughly urge you to read *both* the materials released by the Guild and individually released statements by Accused Members before making your choice on penalizations.

I volunteered to help an autistic writer involved in one of the WGA disciplinary appeals currently before the membership. The sloppy, unprofessional way the guild handled itself during the process was very embarrassing to me as a member.

L.A. has the most insane gas price spread. Same side of the street, same brand of gas, but about 1000 yards north…$1.20 cheaper!?

With studios abandoning DEI initiatives, what will agents & managers tell white clients who still can’t get work?! Anyone remember what their go to excuse was back in the 80s and 90s?

When the strike is long over & the time comes to negotiate an individual deal on a project, it will serve you well to remember how incompetent & incapable the people controlling the money at these companies are. They need you. Know your worth.

The current goal of studio PR is to make WGA members & the town believe we’ve won & if we turn down any offer now, we’re greedy fools. Back in reality, the WGA will calmly make logical, rational moves—appropriate & normal for resolving a labor action—as they’ve done all along.

The WGA strike is at a critical point. Our leverage & power have cumulatively built every day. Studios will make concessions previously claimed impossible, but not without testing our resolve. They’ll offer the minimum we might accept to guard the max they’re willing to give. 🧵

I’m running for the WGA Board of Directors. I want to ENFORCE OUR GAINS, AUTOMATE COLLECTION OF LATE PAY, use BIG DATA ANALYSIS to locate underpayments, BAN IF/COME DEALS, and SUPPORT OUR SISTER UNIONS. 🧵

In last year's WA election I was the only candidate to bring up Artificial Intelligence. I'm thrilled the strike will give us the opportunity to negotiate Al protections, but for Al-just like late pay, free work, and other abuses-enforcing the terms is as important as what's in the contract.Van Robichaux photo from his WGA Candidate site.

As a WGA member, full on solidarity with actors. Speaking just for myself, I believe deepfakes and “AI” and voice synthesis poses an even greater existential threat to actors than to writers. And what’s happening to recurring roles is similar to what we’re facing in the plague of mini rooms.

You could build generative AI models with just public domain & licensed material. The major AI companies intentionally choose to not do that. Instead they use people’s work w/o permission because they recognize the value that work adds & hope to extract it for free. It’s art laundering.

Here’s how screenwriting currently works. After months of free pitching on dozens of jobs, you finally sign a contract to get paid to write a film script. You‘ll be paid half when you start & half when you deliver the script. It’s due 12 weeks later. Seems pretty simple except…

I’ve been using GPT-3 since the private beta in 2020 and I’m 99% sure I’m the only produced screenwriter that’s true for. Here’s my thread about why I’m not worried about AI scabs taking our jobs during the WGA strike (this time).

An article is going around claiming Hollywood studios have a plan to use AI to write screenplays during the writers strike. This is mostly anti-strike propaganda meant to discourage writers, but I certainly believe it’s something they’d like to do. For now it’s a hollow threat for a few reasons…
