Let me be clear, I don't want the BQE to be rebuilt. However, I also don't think it's so simple to suggest that it could easily be removed and we'd all be fine.

West Side Highway and the Embarcadero both literally fell down. They also were not in the center of a major interstates that handle +100k vehicles a day (ditto the last one for Rochester). I-81 is being torn down, but not before the other expys around Syracuse are being expanded.

Yeah, the MTA might be frustrating to use. But have you been to New Jersey?

Consolidating Hewes and Lorimer wouldn't be done on a new structure. It would still be on the existing one. This is an entirely different conversation. But building large concrete towers along a relatively narrow street like Broadway is gonna be a non-starter.

To be fair, he isn't suggesting closing that stop. The chart clearly shows that it would add an insane amount of time to trips. It's there as part of a random sample maybe? Why am I defending this dude lol?

That's a strong maybe. Def would get a lot of backlash from the wealthy homeowners of Ditmas Park tho.

Meanwhile, disgraced former Gov Andrew Cuomo just bought a multi-million dollar mansion in the Hamptons after saying he'd move to Florida if Mamdani won. pagesix.com/2026/09/30/l... Promises made. Promises broken. Andrew Cuomo.

I've always been a fan of that. It's also a different proposition than just closing a station: it consolidates two close stops and adds a transfer. I really don't want to see other stations closed. A better way to look at low ridership stops is that they provide a great opportunity for TOD growth.

While you are correct, that feels wildly premature, unfortunately. There appears to be no appetite for Phase 3 for this generation.

One look at the other stations at the top of this list proves how flawed their assumptions and algorithms are. Chambers St, 5th/53rd, Gand St. etc? What are they thinking?

Andrew Lynch | vanshnookenraggen @vanshnookenraggen.com · 02/10/2026
The author makes the argument that the time savings would offset the added walk time. But they don't consider the added time from congestions (trains waiting in the station as riders crowd on) or the extra egress time with a higher density of riders moving through a station.

This is what happens when you only look at numbers out of any kind of context. 3 Av reduces crowding at Union Sq. 3 Av ranks 207th of 423 stations (MTA ridership 2025). That's not nothing. stopthestop.com More like #stopthestupidtechbro

MTA, close the 3rd Ave L stop.
How much time would cutting each subway stop save?

Sure, but also building these new lines will take a while too. Ideally, the two happen together.

I sincerely hope that the IBX has a direct impact on affordable housing in these districts and that it can be a proof-of-concept that can advance other projects like QueensLink.

This is an odd problem considering that when the Broadway-Lafayette station was built, a southernly extension of the uptown IRT platform was planned for. Ultimately, this unused mezzanine was put into service in 2012.

Andrew Lynch | vanshnookenraggen @vanshnookenraggen.com · 25/09/2026
The excuse for not originally connecting to the uptown platform was blamed on poor signal locations. I'm not totally sure why, but I'd imagine that the block signal system had its blocks located in such a way that it would be hard to locate the train further south.

The degree to which the conversation surrounding hypothetical civilizational collapse due to AI has supplanted the conversation surrounding actual civilizational collapse due to climate change is, shall we say, concerning.

Bloomberg had a choice. DeBlasio had a choice. Adams had a choice. They all chose to make it someone else's problem. So here we are. Rebuilding it for only 40yrs service life is also kinda cynical, but it at least leaves the door open for the removal one day. nyc.streetsblog.org/2026/09/23/o...

My biggest concern is SEPTA's capacity for that level of construction. MTA learned a lot (good and bad) building SAS Ph1, but had to rebuild their Construction & Development arm to do so. SEPTA is light-years behind the MTA in this regard. Building Roosevelt now would be a boondoggle.
