And here's one IRL. This is the 1929 Travel Air 4000 in which Louise Thaden won the x-country air race known (annoyingly) as the Powder Puff Derby. (Pic by me, at the Kansas Aviation Museum in Wichita.)

Here's a pic (by me) of the SPAD XIII displayed in the "FWW in the Air" gallery at NASM's museum on the Mall in DC. It was flown in combat by US ace Ray Brooks, who gained the last 2 of his 6 victories in her.

"Alles Kaputt" was Col. Hal Watson's squadron hack during Opertion Lusty as he scoured Europe "liberating" advanced German aircraft. Sad it wasn't preserved. (Ref: "American Raiders" by Col. Wolf Samuels, UPress of MS 2004)

Cy Bettis won the '25 Pulitzer race flying this Curtiss R3C (pic by me) now displayed (on floats in its Schneider Trophy config - it was on wheels for the Pulitzer) in the NASM Mall building in DC. (1/2)

To this point, here is the Bf-109G-6/R3 as displayed in NASMs recently opened WW2 in the Air gallery. This is an updated paint scheme, as recent scholarship has revealed more about the a/c's provenance than was known as of the old display. Max effort on historic accuracy here.

Started reading Jon Parshall's "1942: The Crux of War" (thanks, esteemed county librarian!). So far, so terrific. Stats: 1,105 pgs not counting notes, biblio., index. Weight 4 lb, 14 oz. List $45, a bargain! (Do look at the lines below that I copied from the pub data page. Really!! I love this guy.)

I like the B-36 just fine, but the B-47 was both gorgeous and incredibly influential. With its swept wing and podded under-wing jets, it's the direct ancestrr of almost all the air-transport aircraft flying now. (Pic by me, back in May)

70 years ago today, 4 July 1956, CIA pilot Hervey Stockman flew the first mission in the Agency's USSR overflight program in this Lockheed U-2C that's now displayed in NASMs museum on the Mall in DC at the entry to the new Modern Military Aviation gallery (opens in Nov.)(pic by me)

Here's my favorite (pic by me), the Curtiss R3C. Winner of the '25 Schneider Trophy race piloted by Lt. J. H. Doolittle. A short time earlier (and fitted with wheels) it won the '25 Pulitzer Cup race piloted by Lt. Cy Bettis. Displayed in Pioneers of Flight gallery at NASMs museum on the Mall in DC.

If you will, on this Memorial Day join me in raising a glass to the memory of my uncle, T4 Edmund J. Peters, Jr. Eddie was an 11th ABDiv trooper who was KIA 2/17/1945, aged 21 years, in the assault on Ft. McKinley, Luzon, PI. He rests now in the Manila cemetery maintained so well by ABMC.

We have X-15 ship #1 displayed in the Milestones of Flight gallery at NASMs museum on the Mall in DC. #2, the speed record holder at Mach 6.72, is displayed at the Air Force museum in Dayton. #3 was lost in a fatal mishap. (pics by me)

TODAY, the Kansas City streetcar is free to ride all along Main St from the Riverfront to UMKC. It is outstanding! (We visited KC a few months back, rode the delightful streetcar a bunch. Loved it.)

The T-38 that Miss Cochran used to set eight speed, altitude and unrefueled range records in 1961 is displayed at the west end of NASMs museum on the Mall in DC.

It is pretty cool as small aviation museums go. Personally, I fell in love with this Staggerwing.

Visited the Kansas Aviation Museum in Wichita today and enjoyed seeing this Travel Air 4000 that Louise Thaden flew to victory in the 1929 Santa Monica-to-Cleveland air race for women often referred to as the Powder Puff Derby. Just one of a number of lovely aircraft with KS roots on display.

So, on the road in Wichita, KS and look what has parked in front of our hotel. Very cool!
A bright yellow auto chassis/body surmounted by an orange curved tubular superstructure that is a hot dog! The Oscar Meyer logo is featured prominenty. It is, in fact, the Wienermobile, hurrah!

And here, NASM's SBD patiently guarding the entrance to the new WW2 in the Air gallery at the museum on the Mall in DC. The gallery will open to visitors early in July.
A Douglas SBD suspended in a museum. Prop driven low-wing monoplane from about 9 o'clock, a bit low. Blue with WW2 USN star-and-bar insignia; buff undersides. Canopies for 2 crew are open; aft crew pos'n has aft facing twin MGs mounted. Large od bomb on c/l + 2 small od bombs under wings.

Harry Hawker appears prominently in @rooneyvision.bsky.social's "The Big Hop" for his part in the Sopwith effort alonside Alcock & Brown's 1st crossing of the pond in the Vimy (the latter is, ofcourse, the main focus of this very fine work.)

I *think* that the damaged aircraft pictured is a Curtiss Seagull (aka Model MF or as Model 18). Here's a photo of a very rare survivor, displayed at a museum in New Zealand.
Old biplane flying boat with polished wood hull, single engine mounted on struts rising from the hull, just below the top wing. The liquid-cooled engine has a radiator in front and drives a two-bladed wooden pusher prop. The aircraft is a Curtiss Seagull.

Ahoy @mikedavis.bsky.social Do you have access to the Bishop's journal entries for May 1910? Below a facsimile of the Wright School Field Report showing Orv taking him up for a 6'55" flight; wondering if he journaled about it on 5/25 or 26. (Also shows 6'26" flight of OW+WW together just prior.)
