The Strangled Woman (c. 1870–72) is one of Cézanne’s most disturbing early works. Art historian André Dombrowski devoted a full chapter to it, arguing that these violent subjects were not private fantasies but expressions of the instability of modern life.

Cézanne's Luncheon on the Grass (c. 1869) answers Manet's scandalous picnic of 1863 with darker, heavier paint and none of the ironic polish. Where Manet provoked with cool detachment, Cézanne provoked with sheer physical force.

Cottages of Auvers (c.1873) marks Cézanne's transition under Pissarro's mentorship. Working outdoors in Auvers-sur-Oise, his palette began to lighten. However, this somber village scene still carries traces of the dark intensity he was leaving behind.
