Here’s the most incredible story you’ll read today. A small plane with four people aboard crashes in a field. Another pilot witnesses it. That pilot happens to be flying a bunch of skydivers. They offer to jump to assist, are given permission. The skydivers happen to be EMTs. Everyone survives.

Spending time in the presence of one of Ireland's extremely rare ancient trees, like this hulking oak near Bandon with local man Dan Holland, are for me life highlights. But it's always bittersweet, tempered by the knowledge that such stupendous beings were once commonplace. We have lost SO much.

Due to my state's ageing ferry fleet and the lack of federal funding we were stuck on our little island adventure for much longer than anticipated. The Moon had something to say about it. :)

Smile, it’s Friday! 😃 Meet ‘The Oldest Smile in the World’ a tiny face that’s been smiling for some 7,400 years! Carved from oak during the Mesolithic, this small human figure was found in 1966 in a layer of peat during dock construction at Willemstad in the Netherlands. #FindsFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a human figure roughly carved from dark brown oak wood during the Mesolithic period about 5,400-5,300 BC. It is 12.5 cm tall with a long body with two finger-shaped indents on the right hand side (left in my photo), suggesting it was made to be held in the hand. The stylized head has deeply carved eyes, nose, and open mouth. The triangular shape of the mouth makes it look as if the figure is smiling, leading to its description as ‘The oldest smile in the world’. It is displayed against a black display case background at Landesmuseum Halle in Germany where the figure is currently on loan for the ‘Shamaness’ exhibition. It is part of the permanent collections of Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden, Netherlands. It was found in a layer of peat in 1966 during the construction of a dock at Willemstad, North Brabant, Netherlands.

My linocut on white Japanese paper shows 18th century woman (Laura Bassi) in dress with fur cape, and hair in ringlets with a hairpiece which echoes a laurel crown. She’s holding an open book with Newtonian optics diagrams and in front of her is an electrical machine (a stand with vertical large glass plate and hand crank and brass tubes to channel the large electrostatic charges it could generate through friction). She is surrounded by typical high tech lab equipment of her day like conductors, an aurora flask, a luminous discharge tube, a Lane electrometer, Leyden jars and Volta's electric pistol. It’s printed in a gradient of a hint of turquoise through violet to red-magenta to bronze from the bottom to the top.

A miniature masterpiece from 40,000 years ago! 🦣 🤩 This tiny carved mammoth figurine measures a mere 3.7 cm in length, yet the #IceAge artist captured naturalistic detail with aesthetic perfection! Mammoth ivory. Vogelherd Cave, Germany 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a tiny mammoth figurine carved from mammoth ivory some 40,000 years ago, dated to the Aurignacian culture. It is one of the oldest known works of portable art. It is viewed in profile with head to left, mounted on a thin dark metal display stand against a dark background. Although the figurine only measures 3.7 cm in length the artist suceeded in capturing naturalistic details combined with an aesthetic eye to create a tiny object which encapsulates the characteristic form, power, and beauty of the animal. The ivory is weathered, now a mottled yellowish-greyish-brown colour. The mammoth’s head is rounded with a long, slightly inward curved trunk. At the back of the head, the upper back rises into a distinctive rounded shoulder hump giving it a characteristic woolly mammoth form. The line of the lower back and rump slope downwards to a short pointed tail. The body is large with thick rounded forelegs, and slightly shorter, thick hind legs, giving it a massive and powerful appearance. It was found in 2006 in the spoil heap from the earlier 1931 excavations at the Vogelherd Cave in the Lone Valley in Germany’s Swabian Jura. The Ice Age caves of the Swabian Jura are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Physicist Dr. Ursula Franklin helped invent archaeometry--the application of materials science to analyze archaeological artifacts. She used modern physics tools to date/determine the compositions of ancient metals & ceramics to uncover how ancient peoples lived/worked. Born #OTD 1921. #WomenInSTEM
A charming photograph of Dr. Ursula Franklin (1921–2016), the pioneering Canadian experimental physicist, metallurgist, and humanitarian activist. She is positioned slightly off-center against a minimalist, solid slate-blue backdrop. Captured from the chest up, she looks off-camera to the right with a bright, genuine smile that showcases her warmth and sharp intellect. Her short, styled silver-grey hair frames her face, and she wears thin-framed, amber-toned glasses. She is dressed in a crisp, purple-and-white vertically striped button-down shirt. Around her neck hangs a delicate silver chain supporting a striking teardrop-shaped pendant featuring a vibrant orange-red stone or amber setting. The lighting is soft and even, accentuating the fine lines of a long, accomplished life. The clean, professional composition evokes a mood of joyful wisdom, deep dignity, and enduring historical significance, celebrating a legendary woman in STEM.
