lmao i just learned that if you bring two ppl who hate a play to the theater to see it together they’ll still get a lot of support points because they’ll bond over being haters

it’s like the quality of a person’s work has little to no correlation with whether they’ve ever sexually assaulted someone

The fact that I can synthesize a thought like "I wonder if Kalshi has odds on the Merram-Webster word of 2026 being 'slop'." means we live in the darkest timeline.

Exactly. I am tired of seeing the “I always knew”/“their work was actually bad” takes whenever allegations emerge. Sometimes—often, actually!—bad people find their way into good spaces and make good things. And you’re not better than the folks who were taken advantage of for “always knowing”

I think “digitizing very old manuscripts” and my brain tells me “four figures USD per page” (based on: I had a friend in college who got her degree in art restoration) (she basically had an art + chem double major)

Quite frankly, if I’d known that the average person who “loves coding” had so much contempt for their work that they were happy turning in mediocre computer-generated code, I’d have suffered through a mechE degree instead of going into CS.

I enjoy writing code! “The computer can write your code for you” is about as appealing to me as “The computer can pet your cat for you”. What’s next, a computer that drinks my beer and watches the sunset so I can spend more time on design docs???

More money can get you features like: - better handfeel (shape, size, and material of the handle/nib holder) - better balance - more ink capacity - more visual appeal but those are all nice-to-haves. The ink flow is the *really* important part, and that can be Pretty Good for $30

Oh they *improve* as the price goes up, but the bar for “it works well enough that it doesn’t get in my way” is pretty low. I’d guesstimate that a minimum viable pen - smooth flow without unintended drips - would cost $15-$20 (based on costs of other medium-precision glass stuff)

as soon as i heard each of these were running in their own (not huge but also not trivial) VM instance i wondered how long it would be before people figured out how to use them for arbitrary compute. i *think* networking is pretty locked down so it’s not a free botnet *yet* but hey free compute..

I learned this one as The Ladies-In-Waiting in Art History class. Which, in retrospect, is pretty funny, because this was at a school where you *had* to take French, Spanish, or Latin.

When I played XCOM I only took a shot at 75% chance or greater and wrote down whether it hit or missed. Over the course of the campaign, I missed more than half my shots. lol

I regret to inform you that St. Louis is near the epicenter of one of the worst earthquakes in US history (I don’t believe the 7.3 estimates for New Madrid; if they can feel it in Canada, that’s a 9+)

Memphis actually did a better job at flood mitigation than a lot of the West Coast does. What do you *mean* “the riverbank isn’t public land and you can just put stuff there”

I know in the US they will take slightly different routes to either spend more or less time in the jet stream (more when it's going the same way you're going, less when it's opposite you) but those are usually not "j/k let's go over the pole" levels of deviation
