Queer & trans organizers in Newark link environmental injustice, redlining, & the racism at the root of it, Lana Leonard reports. While locals could not stop a fourth fossil fuel power-plant facility constructed in the Ironbound neighborhood, their efforts illustrate the fight for a better world.

The debt, deportation, and death bill has passed. Congress further decimates care work to fund violence work. Vital services eviscerated and ICE becomes the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency ever known. It hasn’t been sold this way, but it’s a massive public jobs program for fascists.

The connection between fossil fuel money and anti-trans groups makes way more sense once you understand the concept of petromasculinity
In her 2018 paper on the subject, Daggett argues that traditional masculine identity is inherently tied to the fossil fuel economy. “The narrative of righteous fossil democracy is crucial not only to American identity writ large, but to its hegemonic white masculinities,” she writes. When the narrative of righteous fossil fuel democracy is challenged, it thus becomes interpreted as a challenge to those masculinities. “Through the rosy nostalgia afforded by petro-masculine identity,” Daggett writes, “the affront of global warming or environmental regulations appear as insurgents on par with the dangers posed by feminists and queer movements seeking to leach energy and power from the state/traditional family.”

The intentional starvation of the people of Gaza clearly meets the legal definition of genocide, but it doesn't *need* to meet that definition for you to oppose it. The definition debate isn't entirely pointless, but legal distinction isn't what's most important in the midst of mass murder.

Weather doesn’t take the night off. We need 24/7 operations at every office every day. We shouldn’t be trying to find coverage at the last minute when severe weather is anticipated. If every office is staffed, you don’t have impacts to services.
Kim Doster, a spokeswoman for NOAA, confirmed this week that "several local NWS offices are temporarily operating below around-the-clock staffing."
She said the Weather Service "does not anticipate a significant impact in services as we work to mitigate potential impacts and direct other regional offices to provide additional support."
