There’s such an easy answer to this “gotcha” question and it’s “Sports are inherently unsafe and unfair and it’s ridiculous to single out trans athletes when we allow 150 pound linebackers to go up against 260 pound linemen in freshman football on a daily basis. Let kids play with their friends.”

There is a plague within liberalism where appearing smart and disinterested in an issue is seen as superior to actually caring and worrying about outcomes. Creating complex rationales and processes matters more than results. Procedural justice is seen as more important than distributive justice.

“Riot control has become the transcendent issue in the current mayoral election, as candidates propose competing schemes to finance thousands of new cops by privatizing or downsizing the rest of city government.” Who Killed LA - Mike Davis 1993
Black or white, has dared to criticize Williams' handling of the Daniels case or to demand a federal indictment of Officer Iversen.
Terrified by apocalyptic images of another uprising—"Tet offensive of the gangs', in the words of one homeowners' association president
—the middle class, liberal as well as conservative, has rallied around the department. Riot control has become the transcendent issue in the current mayoral election, as candidates propose competing schemes to finance thousands of new cops by privatizing or downsizing the rest of city government.A quarter-century later, he was again summoned from the O'Melveny and Myers skyscraper to deal with the racial emergency arising from the near-lynching of Rodney King. Not surprisingly, the chairman of the eponymous Christopher Commission (one of his law partners was executive director managed to steer its deliberations away from the historic demand of the Black and Latino communities for an independent agency to monitor police misconduct. While mouthing the slogan of "community policing', the Commission focused on increasing the upward accountability of the police chief to the mayorand the city's invisible government of developers and corporate heads. A counter campaign by community activists to force a referendum on a civilian review board was derailed after leading liberal organizations, including even the ACLU, instead rallied behind Christopher's highly diluted version of police reform.
In a similar vein, last year's enquiry headed by former CIA and FBI director Webster eschewed any investigation of underlying community grievances or police brutality in order to concentrate on the LAPD's failure to control rioters. As one might have expected from George Bush's chief spook, Webster ignored the Department's notorious history of illegal spy operations in order to stress the centrality of expanded police intelligence in riot prevention. In future street con-frontations, he urged immediate, overwhelming mobilizations of police power.3
In practice, the Webster doctrine of 'rapid containment' has involved the retraining of both the LAPD and the National Guard in modern riot-control technologies including armoured vehicles, plastic bullets and pepper gas. Crowd suppression, in turn, has been coordinated with toughened curfew laws, LAPD regulation of local airspace, and Highway Patrol control of freeway access to ensure that Black and immigrant Latino neighbourhoods can be quickly and comprehensively sealed off from the rest of the world. Elite Marine units at nearby Camp Pendleton, meanwhile, have trained in recent manoeuvres to storm 'urban terrorist strongholds' that bear an striking resemblance to ghetto housing projects.

The UUA decries today's U.S. Supreme Court decisions in Little v. Hecox and West Virginia v. B.P.J., which uphold state laws restricting transgender student athletes. We remain steadfast in affirming the inherent worthiness and dignity of trans people. Full statement at bit.ly/4wgs04V #UU
A square UUA graphic with a dark navy blue abstract background featuring layered curved shapes, subtle wave patterns, and a faint UUA flaming chalice logo on the right. Across the top, a bright blue banner reads: "The UUA Decries U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision in Cases Related to Trans Athletes."

Centered in large white text is a quotation: "Our faith is clear that no court can strip or erase the inherent worthiness of trans, nonbinary, and intersex people."

Below the quote, the attribution reads: "- Carey McDonald" with "UUA Executive Vice President" in smaller italic text beneath the name.

The Unitarian Universalist Association logo appears in white in the lower left corner, and "UUA.ORG" appears in bold white text in the lower right. The overall design uses a modern, high-contrast blue color palette with clean typography that emphasizes the quote.

What organizing experiences do you have that would be useful to learn from today? I have regrets from protests I have organized and mistakes I like to avoid, but a lot of times the successes seemed more spontaneous than organized and not a success of organizing or mobilizing.

My contention is that a lot of people claim credit for activism they weren't that involved in. And also limited awareness of how the same generation moved to the right and killed a lot of the progress. My generation of activists was mostly only playing defense.

I've been active and organized in pretty much every peace and social justice movement in the past 40 years. I've been tear gassed, surveilled and threatened many times. I was mentored by 60s activists and my perspective is informed by their analysis.

I work with older adults every day. Seventy year olds and even their 90 something parents. Activism and apathy are pretty evenly distributed. Abbie Hoffman used to joke about how at least 10 times as many people said they were in Chicago with him as were actually there.
