How do you think the laws for alcohol and cigarettes and age checks actually work? The parents are not involved. The ones who point out we already have mandated age checks for alcohol and cigarettes use it as a false equivalency argument for how this law is fine - but it's not really the same at all

There is an alternative which is that you pass legislation that doesn't require specific ID and allows "innovation" meaning automated facial age checks.. in which case - as happened in Australia - approximately 70% of kids continue to use social media. I'm not saying this is a good thing.

Yes. I have heard it said that they supported it to the select committee stage just to actually give it proper consideration .. that actually feels fair enough - just as long as they eventually come to the right conclusion, which is that this is a massive data grab and not what it pretends to be.

If a candidate for parliament threatened Adern or used such language I think you'd find it would get reported on. On the other hand if a member of the public says such things on social media then well - maybe they should be censured but you're comparing two different things.

you'd hope as minister or foreign affairs, winston peters, may care about how a new zealander on a valid green card has been kidnapped by ICE, and is now being held indefinitely in a prison in the middle of the mojave desert?

I am a NZ journalist currently based in the United States.

I have been writing about the case of Everlee Wihongi, a 36-year-old Kiwi who has been living in Wisconsin since she was age six. Her father moved to the US in the 90s, when NZ Rail was purchased by Wisconsin Central Rail. He was one of 12 train drivers brought over to bring their expertise to the United States.

Everlee got detained by ICE 16 days ago at LAX, and is now locked in an ICE facility in the middle of the Mojave Desert. She was entering the US legally - as she has for the last 30 years - on a valid green card.

She is in a cell with 46 other women, with no official idea why she is there or when she will get out.

As deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand, and minister of foreign affairs, is your office looking into Ms Everlee's case at all?

I have also reached out to the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Trade for comment.
