Kick the football, Charlie Brown!
A Peanuts parody comic, in which Charlie Brown prepares to kick a football held by Lucy.

Charlie runs for the ball, but the energy is different here. He looks focused. Determined. Even Lucy looks surprised.

Just as Charlie is about to kick the ball, a gigantic foot comes in from off panel and punts him. With his token "AUGH," Charlie has exited the scene.

We cut back to Lucy, turning in fear to look at who --WANT-- kicked Charlie.

From Lucy's POV, we see a gigantic humanoid figure, backlit by the sun. They have six fingers on each hand.

We end on a large wideshot, revealing the full scale of the massive creature, with Lucy dwarfed by them.

Their face is implacable, a wisp of wind blows some leaves across the otherwise peaceful scene.

(Also reading this book while also restarting my yearly read of Camus, this time Myth of Sisyphus, is giving me a lot of chew on in terms of what it means to exist in a world that seems very focused on stripping humanity of its crucial features for the sake of productivity)

"The nonconscious imagery becomes necessarily conscious because the organism that owns it is conscious. Consciousness is a welcome side effect of the indispensable process of regulating life. " ~ Antonio Damasio, Natural Intelligence and the Logic of Consciousness 3/3

"Consciousness is not being generated in a separate part of our organisms solely dedicated to "making consciousness." My proposal is that it comes, instead, as a direct consequence of homeostatic feelings being alongside nonconscious mental imagery. " 2/3

I feel like Damasio in writing parts of this book was anticipating the inevitable projection of consciousness on LLMs with passages like this: Pg 45-46: "Trying to find the source of consciousness in a dedicated 'consciousness-making' device is futile. " 1/3

This past of my thread has attracted a lot of responses of the form "Nuh-uh! You have to prove *your* claim!" and I think it's worth reiterating that the burden of proof lies with the people making the claim, not those of us refuting it. Why bother refuting it at all? >>

Maybe holding independent creators to the same standards that we do huge soulless corporations was never really fair. We could have let everyone draw their big tiddy OCs in peace.

Nat Turner was a terrorist. At least, that's what they'd expect the Black community to call him if it were today. He was born October 2, 1800....or 236 years ago today. And somehow they expected a man born enslaved to never want to rebel. To escape. To take revenge.
Four books with Nat Turner as the subject. Left to right, top to bottom.

1. Ten Black Writers Respond to William Styron's "Confessions."

2. The Confessions of Nat Turner by William Styron

3. Nat Turner's Slave Rebellion by Herbert Aptheker.

4. The Resurrection of Nat Turner. Part 1 by Sharon Ewell Foster

“AI” IS impacting labor, but not in the ways you think. In some cases, people generating “workslop” are making their colleagues’ jobs more difficult. Snippet from my video Myths of AI and Productivity, in which we at dispel 5 common myths around AI and labor. www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BO0...
There are three stacked screenshots from a video of Alex, a brown trans woman, sitting on a pink chair and speaking into the camera while holding a small microphone. She has short black curly hair and is wearing a blue long-sleeved shirt and light tan pants. Behind her is a cat-shaped pillow with an image of a tuxedo cat on it, and behind her chair are rows of books on a light blue wall. Underneath are captions from the video that say: “But generative AI can also reduce wages in other ways, namely by punishing workers who use the tools and pass on ‘workslop’ to their colleagues.”, “...researchers report that receiving generative AI text or images from colleagues results in lower perceptions of the competence of their colleagues.” and “Getting slop from your colleague makes you think worse of them. And if those workers are women or older, or people of color, then it confirms their co-workers’ biases against them.”
