Pregnancy is a dynamic process, stretching physiological control to the extreme with lasting postpartum effects. We now have a deeper understanding of physiological adaptation.

Uri Alon @urialonlab.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
In pregnancies with complications (pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, postpartum hemorrhage), distinct deviations from healthy profiles were evident. Gestational diabetes, in particular, showed marked changes, mostly in the pre-conception period.

Uri Alon @urialonlab.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
The study also spans 20 weeks pre-conception, where we see changes in folic acid, CRP, and albumin levels. These hint lifestyle changes such as a healthier diet and taking recommended supplements, supporting healthy fetal development.

Nearly half of the lab tests take many months (and in some cases up to a year) to settle after delivery, highlighting what a journey pregnancy is, even after delivery.

Uri Alon @urialonlab.bsky.social · 27/03/2025
Lab tests can be clustered into stereotypical profiles, implying global control principles governing physiological adaptations in pregnancy. We see strong undershoots and overshoots in many lab tests at delivery, indicating strong compensation mechanisms in action during pregnancy.
