I know this isn't the point, but surely if you're 50% wrong you're also 50% right by default? Like, you can't be 50% wrong and 50% nothing else.

I meant for me personally, although I imagine most OSR-heads would agree. I'm not an OSR-head but Draw Steel, PF2e, etc. are all too convoluted for TTRPGs for me. In my experience, tactical combat and cinematic action are mutually exclusive.

I know Draw Steel has 3 levels of success with static damage, but also the abilities/attacks in that game are over-complicated.

Numenera is a game I really want to like, both rules and setting. But Trad.... 😫 I just think from a game design standpoint, you can do more interesting and intuitive stuff with a to-hit roll (crits, mixed success, etc.) but static damage also feels kinda crap?

I like auto-hit in Oddlikes, but in other games it often feels like damage is the least interesting part of an attack.

Question for #OSR people - which do you prefer? 🎲 Roll to hit, static damage. ⚔️ Automatic hits, roll for damage. Also, why do you prefer it?

Hopefully this will work great. I do worry that the second option might incentivise people to mark genAI works incorrectly to bypass, but at the very least it lets jam hosts clearly draw a line in that sand that genAI is not welcome.

Everyone running a crowdfund campaign needs to hear this. I'd rather get an update telling me there's little to no news, rather than not hearing anything. Some of the best projects are ones that were late and were 100% worth the wait. I'm not in a hurry to get it, but I want to know it's coming.

This might be a hot take idk, but TTRPGs should put what the game is about on the cover. There have been multiple games I was aware of but didn't know anything about, and the name/art didn't grab me. But when reading a little about them and finding out what they're about they've seemed cool.

Yeah, I'm specifically looking for examples with concrete char gen (ie not soft backstory prompts) but that don't have mechanical weight. Most trad games give char gen a lot of mechanical importance, but a lot of story games seem to define characters even more narrowly at char gen (playbooks, etc.)

It's genuinely fantastic that not only was Psi*Run 2e funded but it hit that first stretch goal. But imo it says a lot about the TTRPG industry writ large that Psi*Run, a game by a real luminary, barely broke $24k, and Neon Odyssey made over $16 million.

Last night I ran an OD&D-based LARP inside my 5e campaign. Each PC adopted the role of Fighting-man, Magic-user, or Cleric (and one hireling) and took on OSR-style encounters using foam weapons and beanbags.
