At one point I downloaded the entire old "John Byrne Says" twitter account, but it can be hard to sift through. (And of course there's probably 5 or 10 quotes about X-Men for every one about Superman.)

Specifically, I was reading X-Men and Spider-Man comics armed with the familiarity I got from the Saturday morning cartoon incarnations. You learn to comprehend the sames and differences.

Before I read comics I read Cracked and Mad. But I think all three had a combined effect of jump-starting my development. When you read humor mags as a kid who is maybe younger than the reference, you kind of learn to deduce where the joke is.

The next year, I was identified as gifted -- and yeah yeah, we all know the story of the supposedly gifted millennial kid and how they all turned out -- and I was never sure how I went from one to the other. Today, I realized: in between, I started reading comics.

When I was in the 2nd Grade (or Grade 2 as we call it here) I remember feeling really stupid. I don't know why, but it was to the point I was surprised I passed (kids on TV were constantly threatened with failing.) I just remember never feeling able to satisfy my teacher.

Where his 2000 run on the flagships was scattershot and clunky, X-Treme was remarkably lucid and clear in its identity, even as the story sprawls. It's a new millennium update of the Claremont Touch, with compelling characters and a plot that spiderwebs out intriguingly.

Am I excited for Marvel to hand over its digital comics presence to a third party? No. But for as long as I have had it, Marvel Unlimited has been functionally unusable for most purposes. For examp, its search function is uniquely unsuited to handle 500 different variations of "X-Men" as a title.
