My second edited K-pop collection, The Cultural Politics of Transmedia Storytelling in K-Pop, officially came out yesterday from @bloomsburyacademic.bsky.social. I am a day late to my own publication announcement, but very happy to finally have this one in the world. A thread! #CriticalKPop

My essay “Stillness in Motion: BIBI, Hongdae, and Flâneuserie Under Platform Capitalism” is out today! It looks at urban movement, platform capitalism, and what I call choreographed stillness: moments when stillness resists the systems shaping how women move. #BIBI #Hongdae doi.org/10.4324/9781...

Really proud of my kids and the lives they are starting to build: one diving into theater as they start high school, one getting their first college acceptances, one beginning an EMT program, and one who just got their first law school acceptance. The world is burning, but my children give me hope.

If anybody needs nearly 2,000 songs and 105 hours of K-pop girl groups and soloists, good news: I made you a playlist. I clearly have very normal hobbies, and this seems like a completely reasonable use of my time.

One unexpected side effect of cleaning up twenty-plus years of my online existence: finding a little poem on #LiveJournal that I apparently wrote for a class at MSU and then completely forgot about. Kind of fun to meet a much younger version of myself in the digital rubble.
Image of a short poem I wrote in a class at Michigan State University more than twenty years ago. The poem reads:

“I’m sitting in the corner,
wedged safely
between dreams and friends.
Self-consciously,
I let tiny pulses of sleep
massage the back
of my eyes,
as I wait
for the white noise
to break.”

I genuinely was not sure I would ever publish another journal article after leaving higher education, so getting my first acceptance in years (with minor revisions!) feels surprisingly good. Apparently I missed this a little.

Yesterday, I did something hard, and I am really proud of myself for it: I hit send on an academic monograph and sent it off to a university press that has shown interest. I have no idea whether it will pass peer review or eventually be published. But I wrote the thing.

Latest issue of @inkscomicsjournal.bsky.social includes an editorial by me on teaching comics in difficult times. Writing this openly felt a little unusual for an academic journal, but I wanted to be honest about where comics teaching is right now (for me). Open access: muse.jhu.edu/article/991716.

One of the unexpected pleasures of publishing an edited collection is watching it pop up in the libraries of places where I studied or worked. Undergraduate me would have found it absolutely wild to see my own name in the MSU Libraries catalog like this. Still feels a little wild now, honestly.
A collage of online library catalog listings for the 2026 edited collection, Critical Approaches to Transmedia Storytelling in K-Pop. At the top is the book’s full record in the Michigan State University Libraries catalog. Below it are listings from several academic libraries, accompanied by university logos, including Washington University in St. Louis, Hollins University, and Valdosta State University.

Grateful to @andreastlane.bsky.social for this generous review of my forthcoming collection. It is a strange gift to have someone read a project back with such care. Her words mean a great deal, not only because I adore *her* work, but because she understands what the collection is trying to do.
A review blurb for The Cultural Politics of Transmedia Storytelling in K-pop by Andrea Acosta. The quotation praises the collection for examining K-pop’s transmedia storytelling through questions of racial politics, transnational circulation, idol and fan labor, queerness, and resistance praxis. It describes the book as combining the closeness of fan perspective with the incisiveness of cultural criticism. The attribution reads: “Andrea Acosta, Assistant Professor of Media Studies, Pitzer College, USA.”

One comment on my student surveys this semester read, "The feedback feels like it is AI-generated." It is not the first time I have heard that. We have barely entered the era of "generative AI," and already the default assumption is that anything polished or well-written must not be human.

If clean, well-structured prose is "clearly AI," then what exactly are we teaching people writing is supposed to look like? I did not spend decades learning and teaching this craft just to have basic competence dismissed as artificial.

I do not want to make light of how dangerous this moment is, as I am genuinely frightened that Trump’s rhetoric is going to get Ilhan Omar killed. That said, there is something profoundly heartening about watching her walk purposefully toward her assailant, refusing to flinch.

I have often worried that I am desensitized to violence, especially state-sanctioned gun violence. The visceral, embodied experience of watching this latest execution proves otherwise. Realizing this feels less like relief and more like an obligation to stay attentive and be unwilling to look away.

My nervous system cannot take this. Watching militarized, masked men assault protesters while another person is executed by federally sanctioned thugs is not “news”—it is trauma. This is not a glitch in the system. This *is* the system: state violence, protected by impunity, carried out in public.
