Monstrosity has been political since before Theseus killed the priest of the Minoan bull-headed god and instituted his Poseidon-led state religion. (Also he's the son of Poseidon, king of the gods, so that's why he's king of Athens so nyeh!)

This is. This is very normal corporate brand synergy? That's. That's how you'd drum up interest in any remake about a twenty year old book.

The thing that frustrates me most about this "third gender" stuff is that it's living proof of how transmisogyny is deeply baked into patriarchal cultures, and how the societal refusal to recognize trans womanhood is millennia old, but it's been turned into Noble Gender Savage fanfic by dipshits.

I usually point to Odin knowing the womanly art of seidr (which I think is math?). It's not much, though.

... That doesn't even make causal sense! If an abuser reflects on the harm they've done, then yes, they might have unique insights into the power dynamics and systems of oppression at play. But it's the reflection, not the abuse, that would make one a better person. What the hell?

Maybe one of the most important messages that trans people can internalize is that there is no “true trans.” Transition is a *practical choice* we make based on what will best serve our lives. Transness is a social identity that emerges out of that context.

Well dang, should’ve just memed it in the first place
An illustration by Gustave Dore for Dante’s Divine Comedy that shows two silhouetted figures standing on a tall summit gazing up at a great celestial conflagration of souls in heaven. Text reads “We already had free art for people who are broke or bad at designing things. It’s called the PUBLIC DOMAIN”

Someone else was INCENSED when I said a sapphic MC didn't make a book sapphic unless her sapphism affected the plot.

A Black lesbian on Threads offered this comparison: "If I read your Black romance and the main character ends up with a white person, we're going to have words."

u Mae Try @umaenot.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
- What about a book with a sapphic MC detective but the romance is a subplot? ... The relationship is still in the book. - What about a woman who realizes she loves women and spends the book leaving her husband? MF relationship, no attraction or romance. ... No. That's queer, but not sapphic.

u Mae Try @umaenot.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
- No, just the first book. That's a very obvious slow burn enemies to lovers, even if the payoff is yet to come. - What about a book where a woman has attraction to woman but never acts on it? Boring, but crush/admirer is still a relationship.
120
u Mae Try @umaenot.bsky.social · 31/08/2026
It's rampant on Threads too. (I think there's a Sapphic September thing people are trying to get going?) It boggles their minds that someone might define a sapphic book as "a book where a sapphic relationship affects the plot". - What about Gideon the Ninth? Griddlehark is central to the series.

I read Whispered Words and frequently found myself going "Oh right, she's supposed to be a muscle girl and her crush only likes "cute girls" (... gyaru, maybe?). Because she's not... Uncute? Not that buff?

Hmmm. The more I look into this... the lesbian with a trans pride labrys is played by a trans VA. Definitely needed a sensitivity viewer (the labrys should probably come from the heart, Utena-style!), but, while misogynistic, I don't think it's intentionally/subversively TERFy.

Dammit, I was hoping it wasn't the piece of queer media being pitched across Tiktok as "every fandom unites against it". Very unfortunate for sapphic media in the West that LSP is bad AND transmisogynistic.

I'm concerned that it's Lesbian Space Princess, which is getting a lot of a lot of hate (the current viral meme is that every fandom is united against it because it's such a bad movie). If it's TERFy, that's not coming through in the hate, which seems outsized because it's about/for/by queer women.

As a child, my Greek mythology source was The Golden Fleece and the Heroes Who Lived Before Achilles, a 1920s story for children that adapted Euripides's Medea in the final chapter! Which is admittedly wild, but it showed me respect.

Hell I read The Hobbit as a child and then again in a 7th grade Reading Comprehension class. Sure, it was only as an adult reading the book that I picked up that each chapter plunges Bilbo further into the past of English fiction folklore / myth.

u Mae Try @umaenot.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Tolkien literally began The Hobbit as a bedtime story for his children. He only began writing it down because his son Chris would point out inaccuracies, which would cause him to storm over to the desk, mutter "Damn the boy", and jot down a note.

Listening to @owwrpod.bsky.social talk Small Favor & I do have to pop in with a "Well Actually." Marcone didn't join the Unseely Court. The Unseely Court hosted the Unseely Accords between the supernatural factions. ... And it occurs to me that you might have just been swapping Court/Accords. 😅

And that last point is important, because this is not a Japanese phenomenon. It's expected that EVERYONE will go see the latest MCU blockbuster, but real men only see rom coms because they have a date, and even then it's under duress.

I find it useful to think of the boy demographic genres as inclusive and the girl demographic genres as exclusive. shounen is for kids and seinen is for adults, but shoujo is YA girly stuff and josei is what the West calls "women's fiction."
