China is developing its military industrial manufacturing capabilities on the back of Russia's war on Ukraine. Very smart. Europe's increasing dependency on Chinese manufacturing isn't so much. #ChinaSupportsTerrorism

Putin is such a pathetic little man. He must think we're all so stupid not to notice the deals he's made with Iran and North Korea, not to mention China. Keep up the good work, Japan. #SlavaUkraini

It may not have stopped Netanyahu committing war crimes, sure, but it will have stopped him visiting countries signed up to the ICC, or certainly have made it more difficult for him. That can only be a good thing.

Russia is truly a terrorist state. Putin is a monster, a psychopath that knows no boundaries. What bothers me most is China's support for the Russian leader, as without it, the war might not even have ever started. No-one should underestimate the role China plays here. #ChinaSupportsTerrorism

What you can do to bypass authoritarian surveillance
How can people use the internet in authoritarian countries like China, Russia and Iran without revealing their identity? Are there workarounds besides VPNs and proxy servers?

It's almost as if 'peace negotiations' involving the Americans and Russia is a cover for Trump and Putin to get together to work out ways to carve up their respective neighbouring coutries. Like, 'I scratch your back if you scratch mine'. Meanwhile, China just sits back and makes hay either way.

I'll never understand why. Russia could say these tankers are in international waters, and I presume there's a narrow channel along this stretch that counts as international. Only, for as long as Putin continues to break international law/s, no government should be concerned about doing the same.

I was saying back in '22, repeatedly said it since, and say again now, Ukraine's allies, especially all those in Europe, should get planes in the air and boots on the ground. Russia must fail in Ukraine. Spectacularly so. And let's have NATO2, a reformed org for all free & democratic nations.

Ironic too, that as the vid on Vimeo wouldn't play when my VPN was set to Canada (less strict on online privacy), I had to set VPN to Europe. Then, after watching on Vimeo, at the end I clicked to 'like'. Only one can't 'like' a vid anonymously on Vimeo (like anywhere), so I was then taken to /..

Some interesting points made, but the elephant in the room, barely touched upon if at all, is the use of personal data by private companies advising political orgs & actors in democracies across the world. I suspect this is where the really big money is being made, by Meta, Alphabet and Twitter. /..

Risking a pile on, but personally I stay well clear of Zuckerberg products: FB Insta WhatsApp; I'm significantly reducing my reliance on Gates: Windows (I've moved to Linux Mint - superb) LinkedIn (rarely visit/post); & avoid Chinese tech altogether: TikTok big no no. It's easier than you think.

France is perhaps the one European country that has not relied on the Americans for defence, making most of its own weapons, including nukes & subs. Successive British gvts have foolishly gone down the road of contracting out our defence industry to the Americans. Now who's in the better position?

I've been more impressed by your PM Mark Carney's handling of national security than my own PM Keir Starmer. On the downside Canada is next door to the USA whose descent into authoritarianism, even totalitarianism, has been unprecedented. We're all in a very precarious situation, that's for sure.

I live in Britain, and I keep asking myself if I think my government is doing enough to keep us all safe from tyranny, from a rising tide of autocratic countries, and now even a totalitarian administration in Washington DC where the truth is now whatever they say it is. I don't feel safe anymore.

Whatever is done, this thread & all those who have presented legitimate grievances should not be ignored. A public debate needs to take place. I, for one, am loathe to sit through adverts. Nothing that's broadcast is ever free & neither are there any guarantees that any broadcaster won't be biased.

I'd suggest that to avoid a scenario where Reform appoint their own cronies to the board, the gvt move to pass legislation to mitigate such risks. Perhaps one should look at DW (Deutsche Welle) in Germany and how they maintain their independence from gvt. /..

On the other hand, placing the BBC into the private sector, even with regulation, risks handing it over to media moguls with all the inherent risks in that. Perhaps too, ITV & Sky have not moved further right because of the existence of a national broadcaster that keeps them in check. /..

The argument for putting the BBC into private hands, for me anyway, would be to remove any possibility of eg a Reform gvt (never an impossibility with American far-right and/or other foreign state support) from putting in their cronies on the BBC board. /..

Oh? So what is a Netflix subscription, or Virgin Media, or Prime? Are these regressive taxes too? I bet you it will be hard to find actors to work for free, not to mention those working behind the scenes, as well as maintaining all the infrastructure required to provide an ad free service.
