Tell Lawmakers: Stop the Giveaways to the Ultra-Wealthy! Fund What Illinois Really Needs
IFT members have been making it clear for months that Illinois must invest in our schools, public higher education, and state services. We’ve shown the need. And we’ve shown the solution: Tax the ultra‑wealthy to raise the revenue our communities depend on. But based on what just happened in the Illinois House, we need to keep the pressure on. THE MEGAPROJECTS BILL IS THE WRONG CHOICE. The Illinois House passed HB 910, a bill that gives massive tax breaks to private real estate developers for “megaprojects.” Here’s what that means for all of us: Less money for public education, public universities, and state services; OR Higher costs for working families; OR Both Meanwhile, the House DID NOT vote on a constitutional amendment to tax annual incomes over $1 million. So after the ultra wealthy already received an estimated $8 billion in tax cuts from the federal “Big Ugly Bill,” developers get new tax breaks in Illinois, the rich continue to keep more of their money, and the rest of us are left out in the cold. This is a reflection of priorities - the wrong ones. Every dollar given away to megaproject developers is a dollar not invested in fully funding preK-12 schools, public higher education, and state agencies that serve Illinoisans. WHAT ILLINOIS NEEDS INSTEAD We’re pushing for real, progressive, equitable revenue solutions like closing corporate and luxury loopholes, rolling back Trump-era tax breaks for corporations that don’t need them, and more. These solutions matter now more than ever. TAKE ACTION NOW Tell your Senator to vote NO on HB 910 as currently written, and support progressive revenue solutions that strengthen the public good. Stop this bad deal before it becomes law. Use the letter below to tell your state senator to vote NO on the megaprojects bill and demand that lawmakers prioritize full funding — not corporate giveaways.
