We also thank Assemblymember Cecilia Aguiar-Curry for her leadership and partnership in advancing this critical legislation. While the final bill was not as strong as originally proposed, it is an important step toward an economy that works for working families, not just the biggest corporations.

SB 716 exists because of the impacts of the Lineage fire on Boyle Heights and East LA. Months of toxic smoke, rotting food, and pest infestations, while the responsible company got off with minimal fines. This bill gives cities real leverage to hold corporations accountable. Gov Newsom, sign SB 716.

Opinion: Care work is essential. It’s time we treated careworkers that way
For many workers in California, Labor Day offers a long weekend—a chance to rest, spend time with family and reflect on the labor rights generations of workers fought to secure.

📣 Organizing WORKS. Thousands of providers called the Governor and showed up in district offices and at the Capitol to share why the #CABudget would make our jobs harder and ultimately hurt working families. And the state heard us, introducing legislation that responds directly to our asks.

This victory belongs to our members. 💚
We applaud California’s legislature for rejecting the dangerous cuts to home care and child care proposed by Governor Newsom’s budget. This new agreement acknowledges the growing need for workers to provide vital care services to our communities’ children, seniors, and people living with disabilities. Our members are the backbone of California’s economy, providing quality care to hundreds of thousands of families across California. This sends a loud and clear signal to policymakers across the country—start investing in care work, and stop balancing the budget off the backs of our most vulnerable community members.

Profitable companies shouldn’t depend on public programs to cover their workers. AB-177 ensures they pay their share. AB-177 (The Medi-Cal: Fair Share from Big Corporations Act) aims to hold large corporations accountable for the taxpayer costs of their employees relying on the state’s Medi-Cal.
