It took him a moment to see through the competing light sources to ascertain that the tall woman was actually crying. Not silently, either, the way he did when he absolutely couldn't restrain himself; her breath was coming in great gulping sobs, and shudders wracked her chest.
What the hells? This woman grew more baffling to him by the moment. She made no attempt to wipe her face, letting the tears slip down her chin and drip down her neck. A strange thought intruded-she was beautiful, in her way. He hadn't really noticed before, other than noting her striking eyes. Not the way he was beautiful, of course, but there was something oddly compelling about the sharp angle of her nose, something graceful about the curve of her cheekbone beneath a ripple of white hair the wind had plastered to her wet face. Why he was noticing this now, of all times, when she was blubbering like a wounded owlbear, was beyond him.

"Please," Nerys said faintly, her voice gone hoarse. "I have the most awful feeling clawing up my throat. I need help." Her head drooped forward as she groped for her sword.
Astarion's nose crinkled. Who in the sweet hells was she talking to?
"There's something very wrong," the drow went on, "with...with me. I don't..I can't remember..." she squeezed her eyes tightly shut for a moment. "Whatever...whatever compulsion grips me, I cannot hold back on my own." Nerys throat worked as she took up the sword in both hands and then drove the sword decisively down into the earth, both hands gripping its crossguard. Oh, for fuck's sake.
"Goddess, hear me. Whatever your aid might cost, I will pay. I put myself in your hands, Sarenrae. Only deliver me from this torment." Her chest was heaving like she couldn't breathe. Not only was she praying, perish the thought, but she seemed quite mad. But perhaps he could work this to his advantage, somehow? Doubt crept up Astarion's spine.

They had crossed planes, she realised, their disembodied forms suspended and shimmering in the great, starry sea of the astral plane.

That was when it dawned on her.

He was not merely showing off.

Perhaps a little. Perhaps because he knew that she grasped how very impressive this feat of magic was. Something so rare and powerful it was almost singular, defined by the skills he had spent a lifetime cultivating, and whatever trace of power he still had lingering in his soul for once being Mystra’s Chosen. He wanted to impress her, like he was still, somehow, uncertain that he had the whole of her heart.

But that was not the sole purpose of this. It wasn’t even the strongest motivator.

She understood then with the clarity of daylight, the transparency of their astral forms shimmering against the backdrop of the cosmos, that this was an act of deepest love.

A love for his craft, his art, the thing he had dedicated his life to from so young an age it had become his most constant companion. He was indulging in it again not for practicality and purpose, as he’d had to do so often of late, but for the pure, unbridled joy of it once again. For pleasure—deliberately frivolous, simply to enjoy every beautiful thing it had to offer one final time before the curtain fell.

And a love for her so profound it would have pulled the air from her lungs, if she had need of air at all in this form. He had brought her along with him. Yes, to declare his love, but primarily to show her just how much she meant to him. To place her at the very heart of all he held dearest and say, in no uncertain terms, that she belonged there. That she was as important to him as his foremost love.

He wanted her to know magic as he did—truly know it, and love it, and leave her fear of it behind in the surrounding shadows of Reithwin as she moved forward.

But how was she supposed to move forward without him?

Gale’s face fell, sensing the strand of sadness she had plucked. His ethereal hand smoothed against her cheek and his voice whispered in her head, soft as morning dew.

Stay with me now…

She pressed her cheek into his palm, the sensation of it like touching the very surface of a body of water, soft as silk.

If they only had this one night, she’d do better than to waste it on self pity.
