This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"
Tumblr post by graftini:

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”

I wonder a lot about this phenomenon (trend?) of needing to center oneself when reading rather than, you know, reading. why are stories expected to be self-affirming? why are people so much less willing to be provoked, uncomfortable, or uncertain when they read?

the BBC is a collaborator and if they aren't stopped they will accidentally-on-purpose normalize more fascist terror until it takes over the government. I know because this literally just happened! I was there!!

three types of people who read this article: people who read it and move on with their day, people who read it in tremendous pain but struggle through, and people who take enough psychic damage to derail their week

"will your parents be coming? I'd love to see them" my MIL says, as if I would ever in a million years invite my parents to my husband's birthday. his parents are inevitably going to want to spend the weekend with him and fight over who gets when. the birthday gift of enormous psychic damage

MIL insisted on a surprise birthday party for my husband this year. I acceded, but am now navigating the tricky issue of his parent's divorce, the presence of his parent's spouses (neither of whom my husband particularly likes), and the extra pressure this will put on him to entertain them. shoot me

"Nojima has later lamented that the focus was on what the male staff thought was cute for Rinoa...he has also said that they should have had more female staff in the mix for the romance parts of the story." to be fair, "men will tolerate anything if you're pretty enough" is a valid lesson to learn

cannot describe how vindicating it was to learn that Rinoa Heartilly was designed and scripted entirely by men

the Ceuta fiasco is so dispiriting. an organized disinformation campaign that ends in dozens of deaths, thousands of photos (the real goal) that were instantly used to stoke tensions and help bolster the world's worst fascist trash, and all of Europe's governments go "hmm yeah they've got a point"

your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors

the obsession with "plot holes" and "worldbuilding" has been so poisonous for art. if you need stories to be wholly literal and the prospect of uncertainties or inconsistencies is that daunting, you're not ready for adult literature

this is why I have such a viscerally negative reaction to "lore." knowing what questions not to answer is a necessary part of writing. the contemporary trend of answering every conceivable question is part of the ongoing infantilization of audiences and we should resist it at all costs

Yes! There's also an aspect of nuance, I think---mothers in particular are so good at all kinds of more subtle communication and layered meaning. Maybe that's why they're so good at close reading.

The upcoming reactionary movement is going to be chock full of internet kids who do not understand history, do not understand art, do not understand how to parse meaning out of anything they read, and are aggressively allergic to thinking for themselves

venn diagram meme, three circles

1. no kink at pride
2. the curtains were fucking blue
3. I asked chatgpt and here's what it said:

1-2 intersection: sex scenes in movies are pointless
2-3 intersection: oh you think you're better than me?
3-1 intersection: "degeneracy" is just zoomer slang

centre intersection: upcoming reactionary movement

I have a theory that it's loosely correlated with age but also a more worrying trend of solipsism in which people are incapable of engaging with fictional perspectives. like they cannot imagine something they aren't a part of or isn't happening to them

tydides @tydides.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
I have to admit this is a phenomenon I don't understand at all. I'm not here for me, I'm here to give these (fictional) people (fictional) problems

they're not instantly hitting you in the face with propaganda. the goal is for you to look around, realize everything you love and enjoy is now owned by KSA, go "huh, well, what are you gonna do?"
120
tydides @tydides.bsky.social · 13/07/2026
people are missing that many of these KSA acquisitions are meant to be subtle. they don't want you to notice! yes, more due diligence is always good, but stuff like this is completely forgettable and especially with very old franchises. GDQ deserves a lot of grace here

getting older is great tbh. marriage rules when you love the person you're married to. today my husband is out of town so I spent the day reading books and watching/donating to SGDQ. also being older means you need one (1) drink to get solidly buzzed and can call it quits at 10 PM

LRP no matter how bad it is in the place you are, you have an obligation to make it better. we've all felt "fuck it, hope it burns" but that doesn't solve problems or help anyone. whatever future you long for can't exist unless you start building it

I’m gonna be real with you all, I think that anyone who thinks America’s a shithole that isn’t worth saving isn’t worth listening to. The idea of a purifying revolution-to-come is a fantasy, a terminating piece of cope that keeps you from believing it’s worth putting in the work now.
