As a Canadian I am curious how my followers in the USA are feeling about your President using economic force against Canada and Mexico. Does it feel really great to you?

Never in my life have a read a novel in which I so totally identified with the main character. Published in 1972, this book has the grace of being writerly written, a book about artistic integrity. Check out my review. www.twiltondale.ca/wiltons-read... www.twiltondale.ca/wiltons-read...

We all strive for, and pride ourselves in, being objective. However our subjectivity can be full of wisdom and sensitivity. My blog for this month looks at this dualism from the perspective of being a reader and a psychotherapist. #psychotherapy #literature #books www.twiltondale.ca/blog

So, an imagined conversation … Musk: can you create a distraction for me so I can dismantle everything that stands in the way of our greed and lust for power? Trump: Sure, I’ll gather all the reporters we allow in to talk about tariffs, and Gaza, and military force to get Greenland and Panama.

We finally know the game. It’s called “Who wants to be the 51st State?” So far we know of four contestants: Canada, Panama, Greenland and Gaza. Of course, all want to be kicked off the show before it even begins.

Apparently Trump thinks Canadians will have better health care if he annexes our country as a 51st state. We spend half as much per capita on healthcare but have a much longer life span. Universal healthcare works much more efficiently. No need to deflect $ to admin and profits.

I treat survivors of trauma, some of which is beyond imagining. Let me be clear. Gestures of oppression and hate are intended to instill fear and perpetuate the horrors tied to them. A gesture of hate is active participation in harm to other human beings. It is violence.

<dons mathematician hat> Sufficiently complex processes will and do give rise to chaotic and unpredictable behaviors. Something as straightforward as a hand-cranked eggbeater will produce an effect so complex that the *exact* results are unpredictable.

Chaos theory is only about a half century old, but it is a good model for understanding how deterministic systems produce unpredictable outcomes. The idea that a complex but completely deterministic brain could produce imagination and creativity isn't far-fetched at all. It seems to be inevitable.

We have been so saturated with linear / deterministic thinking that it is hard to consider there can be any other approach to understand how things come to be. Complexity theory offers that opportunity. You might enjoy a recent blog I posted www.twiltondale.ca/blog/archive...

If we consider the course of events as arising from complexity with its melange of contributing factors rather than from linearity with its determinism then adaptation, creativity and meaning make a lot more sense.

Here's my problem: if each & every day we make thousands of micro decisions & they are not the same each moment... &, as determinism posits, any single behavior we possess is deterministically caused, then a different deterministic force would have to exist for EVERY single deterministic effect.

On this Jan 6th, take it from a person who grew up with a narcissistic mother: RESISTANCE isn't always combat. Resistance is also choosing actions that give you your own self-respect. Finding healthy sources of information outside of them. & fighting FOR your own ideals, instead of fighting them.
Take it from a person who grew up with a narcissistic mother: resistance isn’t entirely combat. Resistance is also: avoiding low-hanging fruit; doing things they didn’t want you to do; deciding your future even if it’s unpopular; choosing actions that give you your own self-respect; finding healthy sources of information outside of them; being successful even when the odds are stacked against you; finding acceptance from people they didn’t want you to know existed; fighting FOR happiness instead of fighting them - which keeps you IN unhappiness. And leading others to see that false choices created by toxic people only perpetuate their control of you. And that isn’t resistance.

Certainly imagination, creativity, and invention are 3 aspects of the human mind that don't make sense in deterministic frameworks. We sort of imagine progress - and then work to make it reality. We don't “choose" the future, we actively create it or will it into existence.

I encourage folks to move away from New Year's resolutions and instead focus on intentions. Rather than treat yourself like a machine with production value, think about your dreams. What makes you feel good? Aim for those things. Don't guilt yourself all year. Let yourself grow.

In Canada the ethics are that the one paying the bill is the client for whom the psychologist is working. Has access to the records that are generated as the service is given. Better to gift the funds to the person receiving the face to face service to give to the professional.
