I keep the door to my home office closed when I’m not in there, mainly to keep the dogs from rummaging in the wastebasket and the like. This means that when I walk into the office in the morning, I get a hit of lignin as though I’m walking into library stacks. This is a happy thing.

I finally read Pedro Páramo earlier this year. That was a trip of a very particular kind.

Roses are at it again

A dramatic cluster of reddish-pink roses in various states of bloom and withering. It looks painted, or at least like an old photo, something from time long past but it was only yesterday.

Bond’s suits were made by Saville Row tailor Anthony Sinclair. Sinclair said a secret agent would wear a suit that could stand up to a lot of abuse. As such, he asked Connery to sleep in his suit, and was delighted it looked good as new the next morning. 32/52

I mean, I like it, but going down that road is a real choice, especially considering that I don’t change the keycaps on my keyboard, so I’m touch-typing blind all the time.

(This is especially funny to me because I’ve typed using the Dvorak keyboard for 20 years.)

My gf & her bestie liked it (the bestie is a HUGE fan). If you ever want pointers / a first-hand account, I’m sure my gf would be happy to share.

The style of that door— the panels, the scale, etc— kinda reminds me of the “Gates of Paradise” baptistery doors in Florence, the ones Ghiberti did. I’m sure the scenes depicted on n a bank door aren’t exactly Biblical, but the resemblance is definitely there.

My partner has seen her in Mexico and Florida, and is tapped into that community (the “Bramily”), so she was all over it the minute tickets were available. :)

7. "some people find LLMs useful" is a different claim than any of the following: a) LLMs are good at doing the things people use them for b) LLMs are well suited to the tasks for which they are advertised c) LLMs "can do" something

We saw Brandi a few weeks ago in Austin. (I’m a fan, and my partner is a *big* fan.) Great show as usual.

I think that is actually the biggest problem with those systems. It's not losing some random skill that we have made superflous, it's about taking skills that are the foundation for your agency in this world and your ability to understand it.
