Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay from June 24, 1906.

Nemo is escorted to the royal wardrobe to be dressed and crowned with the golden plume in preparation for meeting the Princess. He is encouraged to keep his cool and not let anything disturb him, but as he is about to step into a gold carriage, he collapses. Nemo immediately wakes up in his bed at home to find he is being pulled out by his feet because he did not get up when he was supposed to.

Keiichi Sato didn’t join the production of Giant Robo (1992-98) until episode three, but you can clearly tell he took inspiration from Makoto Kobayashi’s designs when he made the The Big O (1999-2003). They both adopt a distinctly retro style that invokes mid-twentieth century kitsch and nostalgia.
