Congratulations to lawyer and human rights activist Navanethem “Navi” Pillay on her Nobel Peace Prize. Few have devoted their lives to justice, peace and human dignity like she did.

I think few things cheer me up more than the thought of Donald Trump’s rage over a South African/Indian woman (and former UN human rights commissioner) getting the Nobel Peace Prize. Congratulations Navi Pillay! Such a deserving and inspirational recipient.

How has CalMac become so utterly woeful? It is difficult to think of a more useless company. Ardrossan to Campbelltown seasonal ferry not running in 2027 for the fourth year running. Is it time to break CalMac up and look at alternatives. Could Stena or DFDS run the services better?

✅ Low-car city-centre streets ✅ Protected cycle tracks on main roads ✅ Ample cycle parking at shops and huge underground bike parking at the station = Streets safe enough for families to cycle, quieter neighbourhoods for residents and more welcoming cities for visitors. 📍 Delft, the Netherlands

One thing about Copenhagen is that there's tons of dense housing but you *never* find it fronting a busy road with cars racing past, which describes about 90% of the apartments in the US. They manage to make it feel tucked away, private, cozy. (These are all from Sluseholmen, my dream neighborhood.)

What an astonishingly good website and app OBB (Austrian Railways) do. Companies like this (and PKP/Koleo) put railway companies in Germany, France, UK to shame.

Michigan Ave at Wacker, ridiculous imbalance between amount of space for cars v. for masses of people walking, and then the crosswalk stripes don’t even match up with the sidewalk?

Depressing how car parking (and cars in general) ruin wonderful public spaces. In this case, the courtyard at Linlithgow Palace. There’s a public car park less than 100 metres away. And buses and a mainline railway station a bit further.

I am a constant, relentless advocate of rail travel. But Southwestern Railways are an absolute curse. Every single journey is delayed. I’ve travelled in 9 countries (~4,000km) by train this year. Never a substantial delay anywhere else but ALWAYS on SWR!! 🤬 Every. Single. Time.

This implementation in Gdynia does blur the sides of the street and although there is a distinct pedestrian pavement against the buildings, the landscaping and positioning of benches reinforces the concept of a shared space. Cars used the space very slowly, so: a success! 2/

I increasingly feel there isn’t an American conservative alive who understands what socialism or communism really is. Where on earth do they spend 13+ years of education to end up with such fundamental ignorance? I guess they spend all those years learning geography instead. Oh wait.

All painted bike lanes are car infrastructure. The engineers have checked a box, while still allowing at-will, unimpeded movement by motorists in the heart of a major city. This design only serves those who are comfortable being uncomfortable.

Well, kind of. As in Łódź, it feels more like channelling the vehicles and adding some landscaping. The cautious approach is understandable: this is a residential street with many hundreds of apartments and the public transport here is maybe not optimal. It’s all a risk. 5/

But Warsaw *has* held its breath and taken the plunge with an implementation in a residential area. East of the Vistula River, in the Praga-Połnoc district, part of ul. Środkowa is being converted to a woonerf. 4/

But most of it blends the different spaces into a genuine shared space and although cars are permitted, these sections do feel like intruders. But still, it all feels a little contrived and “projecty”. These city centre streets have few residents. The issue of parking is a minor one. 3/

Anchored on Plac Pięciu Rogów and nearby Złota, a small network of streets have been woonerfed as part of the Nowe Centrum Warszawy master plan. Some elements suffer the same as in Łósź - channelled lanes that do not create a living street. 2/

Although some years later than Łódź, woonerfs in Warsaw feel more carefully planned. But still they feel more like pet projects than a real effort to wean people off their cars. Planners have focused their attention on the area immediately east of the Palace of Culture and Science (PKiN). 1/

Love what Glasgow is doing for active travel. I’m not a fan of “side zebras” because ‘every junction in the UK now has pedestrian priority’ but I do like when the road surface is changed (even subtly) to remind drivers.

Yet further down Traugutta, the roadway extends across the full width and the reduction in speed by vehicles (and bikes) is noticeable. No physical calming techniques needed. Cafe tables spread across and the road becomes a real shared space. This is working. The street feels open and safe. 😊 4/

Mark 🔶 @tundrastyle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The delineation just reinforces the status quo. In fact, the resultant dead space encourages cars to park on the pavement. Furthermore, speedbumps suggest that speeding has been predicted from the outset. In this part of Traugutta there really is no “living space” from this development. 3/

Mark 🔶 @tundrastyle.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
The delineation of space for cars, bikes and pedestrians, combined with a lack of enforcement means that the pavement is claimed by cafes for tables (left in the distance) so pedestrians are in the bike ‘lane’. #Łódź #woonerf #activetravel

Further to the post about the ul. 6 Sierpnia woonerf in Łódź, here’s the eastward extension along part of Traugutta. However, I feel the good planners in Łódź have failed and the result is essentially just a bit of landscaping. A thread follows. 1/
