Love what Glasgow is doing for active travel. I’m not a fan of “side zebras” because ‘every junction in the UK now has pedestrian priority’ but I do like when the road surface is changed (even subtly) to remind drivers.

Further to the post about the ul. 6 Sierpnia woonerf in Łódź, here’s the eastward extension along part of Traugutta. However, I feel the good planners in Łódź have failed and the result is essentially just a bit of landscaping. A thread follows. 1/

Saw this in London, and I love it. The bike hanger securely stores six bikes, using a single curbside parking spot. Huge help for those who can’t keep a bike in their home!

The first Polish woonerf (living street) was created in 2014 on a short stretch of ul. 6 Sierpnia in Łódź city centre. Although extended lengthwise later on - and parts of the city centre are fully pedestrianised - there has sadly been no significant expansion since.

“The question is not whether we can afford to remain within the Convention [ECHR]. It is whether, in an increasingly dangerous world, we can afford not to” Political liars and lightweights, like Badenoch and Farage, must never be allowed to take that risk. www.lawgazette.co.uk/commentary-a...
The Law Society
Gazette

In short, if Britain were to leave the ECHR, it would not be
'taking back control. It would be surrendering influence over the rules and institutions that help keep us safe.
The debate about the ECHR is too often conducted as though it were a choice between national sovereignty and international law. That is a false choice.
The Convention advances British interests because it reflects British values: liberty under law, democratic government and the accountability of power.
Walking away would not make Britain freer. It would make Britain weaker.

Given their self-proclaimed sustainability credentials, it’s odd how incredibly difficult it is to get to the Prince’s Foundation’s Dumfries House estate. I want to visit the Maguire Arboretum but an hour’s walk - mainly without pavement - makes it unfeasible.

EV charging in the UK is a nightmare. It never never never works first time. It’s a faff every. single. time. This has to be the single biggest obstacle to further EV take up.

The amount of Amazon workers relying on SNAP and Medicaid has nearly tripled since 2020 — while Amazon’s annual profits soared by over 550%. It’s the same story everywhere: corporate profits are at record highs, while workers’ share of the economy is at a record low. We must unrig the system.

Visited Gdańsk the last week. The critical role of communication (whether accurate or propaganda) in the 20s/30s and the 70s/80s is striking. It is preferable to get the channel to tackle hate speech and deliberate misinformation. But if it cannot or will not do that, then the channel needs to go.

Depressing how every single outdoors pub terrace in Poland is awash with cigarette smoke. Really depressing. Cafes and bars really need to ban it. The vast vast majority of people don’t smoke and don’t like the smell of it.

The Postcards memorial honors the 274 Staten Island residents who were killed in the horrific terror attacks of September 11, 2001.

Their names and birthdays are preserved here forever. Their profiles are carved into granite, each one facing toward Ground Zero.

It is a solemn reminder that behind every name was a whole life. A person with family who loved them and a future they should have had.

25 years later, we remember not only the unimaginable pain our city endured, but every person who never came home and every family that has carried that loss ever since.

I was honored to stand with those families and Staten Island leaders today to remember what this community lost. We will Never Forget.
