Report Estimates Trump Tariffs Cost Georgia $4,771 Per Household
Atlanta, Georgia — Georgia has absorbed an estimated $20.1 billion in tariff costs since President Donald Trump returned to office, equivalent to about $4,771 per household, according to new data from the National Taxpayers Union Foundation.
The figure represents tariffs paid by Georgia importers and converted into a household equivalent; it does not mean each Georgia household directly paid $4,771 in tariffs. Georgia ranked fourth nationally in total estimated tariff impact, behind California, Texas and Michigan. Automobile imports accounted for the largest share of the state’s burden.
Bryan Riley, director of the foundation’s Free Trade Initiative, said tariff costs vary significantly by product. Clothing can face substantial increases, while other goods experience smaller price effects that accumulate across household purchases.
“Almost everything costs a little bit more,” Riley told The Center Square, arguing that higher prices can disproportionately affect lower-income consumers.
The foundation’s estimates use trade data supplied by Trade Partnership Worldwide and cover tariffs imposed through both executive action and federal statute. The organization plans to update its state-level figures quarterly.
Trump has defended tariffs as a way to protect domestic industries and generate federal revenue. His administration has also announced a 50% tariff on Canadian automobiles, trucks and auto parts scheduled for Jan. 1, while a 50% tariff on Canadian steel is already in effect.
Separate Tax Foundation estimates also conclude that tariffs raise consumer costs while generating substantial federal revenue.
