Last year, Janos Fuzik and I organized a symposium on voltage imaging for the @fens.org regional meeting in Oslo. We then teamed up with our speakers to write a review on this. I am very happy to share that this review is now out in #EJN! #neuroscience 🧠 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/author...

New preprint from our lab ⚡ Why do DA and BF bursting neurons carry such similar reward-prediction signals? Are they independent, driven by common input, or causally linked? We find a direct answer: DA activity rapidly and causally drives BF. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... 1/10

Dopamine neurons drive basal forebrain reward prediction in milliseconds
Phasic reward prediction signals in ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine (DA) neurons and basal forebrain (BF) noncholinergic bursting neurons are remarkably similar despite the distinct circuit…

We wrote a tutorial guide on voltage imaging, now out in Neuron: authors.elsevier.com/a/1nlgh3BtfH... Indicators, microscopes, and software have all advanced to the point that it's not so hard -- you can now directly watch the electrical activity of neurons in live animals or in culture.

We developed a new approach for mapping absolute membrane voltage, based on dynamic photocycle control in Voltron2. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... Here's my favorite example: human iPSC colonies break into electrical domains as they begin to differentiate.
Top image shows a greyscale picture of some cells. Bottom image shows a voltage map overlay in color, with two electrical "domains".Wide-area view of membrane voltage in human iPSC colonies.
