Again, difficult to overstate how vile these politics are
I write very much in favor of the death penalty. In fact, I might even be a maximalist in terms of making it an eligible penalty for more crimes — especially crimes against children. But the overly clinical, medically sanitized nature of modern capital punishment is a mistake. It’s deceptively cruel because it attempts to mask what the state is justly doing: killing. Bring back what is efficient and works: hanging and firing squads. Make them public. Doubtlessly some will read that last sentence as an invitation to return to barbaric times. But former times drew on the wisdom of history that understood just how grave the crime of murder really is as a threat to the common good. Enlightened as we think we are compared with the people of formerly benighted times, previous eras practiced capital punishment with far more sobriety than we do now.

With the news of the botched execution of Christa Pike in Tennessee, we can expect a torrent of news stories and editorials on why moratoriums on a supposedly “outmoded” form of punishment must be halted. I suggest ignoring these calls and having legislatures implement time-tested execution procedures.

I agree with this. The people who keep screaming that it's "cheaper" eat the same depressing, boring food, day after day. I'm not making chicken and rice and sandwiches and stew for weeks on end. Sure, that would be "cheaper" in the long run. But you're eating like a dog.

Yesterday I learned that pepper comes from peppercorns. I actually don't ever use pepper (or salt) so I don't own any and never did. Neither of my parents cook so I never saw it as a child. If I saw it somewhere else, it never registered.

My renter's insurance will renew next week. But my property management company uses a third-party renters insurance validation service. And they require the new policy three days before the old one expires. But the new policy doesn't exist yet. Because the old one hasn't expired.

“That’s not enough individuation” Their hero can be Mr Rogers if they want. “Their canon of heroes is selected by the dominant society” Their hero can be Rosa Parks. “Identity formation is about finding your own voice” That takes decades, there needs to be something in the meantime

Kids show grow up with heroes that inspire them to do good in the world and their identity formation should largely consist of toggling back and forth between which hero they want to be like that day

It is devalued in the sense that if your CPE was more than 5 years ago it is categorically invalid and you must do it again. Because they need the supervisor's Report to be current.

Ross @trusty.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
I find it strange that the experience of CPE is so devalued meanwhile the CPE supervisor's Report on you is treated like liquid gold. (At least in my context)

The Cornell community has floated abolishing the Cornell Police Department. We should take it seriously, especially if you think that survivors should have the option of going to the police instead of their schools. I feel strongly about this too, because something people don't understand is that universities at this point are essentially total institutions. For a lot of students, their schools are not just schools.
They're their landlords, their employers, their source of health care, their gym, their coffee shop, the arena where they attend concerts. It leaves survivors with almost no real options. If you can't trust your school and your school systematically discriminates against sexual-assault survivors, where is left for you to go?

one of the ways the media shows which side they prefer, is which politicians they quote uncharitably out-of-context and which they clean up for even when what they actually say and do is offensive (the Biden story ran on the front page less than a week before the 24 election)

Yeah unfortunately it’s too late to do this as this is my last year subbing before I move onto new church work. Had I known the ordination process would be multiple years slower than I was told, I would have done a program like this in 2023 and been a licensed teacher since then.
