I’m gonna be real, thanks to climate change, jokes about Seattle rain just make me sad We’ve been in a drought for a very long time. Mount Rainier is losing its glaciers. The Olympic Mountains don’t have snow. It’s just not funny

I think The Urbanist is such a singular organization in the way it combines journalism, advocacy, and community building. It’s a big part of why Seattle is transforming so rapidly (mostly in good ways!), and it’s why I’ve been a member for years. Consider doing likewise!

Now that the bus lanes are helping bus riders and not substantially impacting drivers...it's not a news story at all.

Today, Seattle's kindergartners took their very first steps into Seattle Public Schools, joining their fellow scholars for a brand new year! This year, every single one of them - from kindergarten through 12th grade - starts the year with something new: free breakfast and lunch for each student.

Yeah I live across from the Safeway on 22nd and Madison and I don’t go in there except under duress. I will order Amazon delivery or something before I will shop there. Premium prices to be treated like a criminal because I want to stop in after work. They even have gates that lock you in now!

They never use the damn bells, either! I’ve been hit from behind twice on Madison, once because I tried to sidestep a puddle and didn’t know there was a scooter going 15mph coming behind me. I am all for micromobility but this really feels like an enforcement issue.

It drives me crazy, to the point of yelling at people, when they are zooming at me on the sidewalk when there’s a bike or bus lane 20 feet away. I also am dubious about the claims that people riding double on the sidewalk are all that concerned about road safety.

This was the real failure of Joe Biden (and like half the reason I left Florida in 2021). He didn’t even do a task force to like, think about shutting down the Fox-Facebook fascism feedback loop after J6. Historic, loser shit.

trunks @trunksahoy.bsky.social · 06/09/2026
Yeah. I am sympathetic to the argument but actually there is no defense against, e.g., the “flooding the zone with shit” fascist playbook. You have to forcefully prevent / stop it from happening, and sequester its actors from society.

King County Metro rocks, and the bus drivers put up with so much nonsense from passengers and motorists alike. Always greet (if you’re boarding in front) and thank the operator! I have so many stories of drivers going above and beyond. Can’t think of a group of people I respect more.

Any given specific NIMBY argument—about infrastructure capacity, or home values, or aesthetics—is nearly always just a shell game masking generalized opposition to anything changing, and which is why it's a waste of time to engage with NIMBYs on details.

Libraries are a crutch, you might get a few bad habits. But you can grow out of that! In non-formal programs or self-motivated learning, the biggest obstacles is self-doubt. I think Python is a fine language to learn first.

trunks @trunksahoy.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I think this depends a lot on how someone is learning. Python is good intro for people doing self-motivated learning because the turnaround from “here’s what code is” to “you wrote something functional” is extremely quick and helps prevent the “I can’t do this” recoil.

How car ownership got expensive: A mandate is priced by what it costs to fit. Nobody prices what it costs to keep. Automatic braking costs $21 to install. The windshield recalibration it requires costs consumers $3-5bn a year, forever. Essay 2/4 on the American car market: tinyurl.com/4z4xkes6

A $354 million safety rule created a $3 billion annual repair bill. This is how car ownership got expensive.

A beloved national icon said of AI, explicitly, “not to replace a human being that belongs to God”, and before her body was cold people are making AI-generated images of her. Have some decency and show some respect. It is a simple thing to do.

There's been so much conversation about artificial intelligence — would you ever consider an AI recording of Elvis singing "I Will Always Love You"?
No. I ain't going to consider AI on nothing that's human being. Because I think that is a weapon and a tool that can be scary. I think it's going to be great for a lot of things, like science and medicine and many, many things, but not to replace human beings. That scares me to death. That's like the mark of the beast. It's like you can't remake a person. I don't want that. I want to just leave a body of work behind. I think all this stuff can be great, used in the right way. But not to replace voices and writings and not to replace a human being that belongs to God.

idk, I only have one eye, have terrible visual processing, and pretty much exclusively watch TV in languages I do not speak. I only occasionally miss an on-screen detail that my partner catches. Dubs are fine for anime, but in live acted stuff I truly hate it. Lip desync from audio is triggering.

A lot of these operations get their contact data from public brokers. The reason it’s impossible to get off the lists is that they pull new lists periodically. The only way to combat it is to use a subscription service (of course) which files constant takedown requests to the brokers.

KCM and SDOT are piloting automated transit lane enforcement cameras. There is actually a “don’t block the box” camera at one of the intersections this transit lane adjoins and my understanding is that it is being repurposed for transit lane enforcement. (These cameras only activate for violations)

We’re delivering a fast, frequent, and reliable Route 8. Community members have fought for years to make Denny Way better. We thank them. Now, we’ll unlock the capacity of this important street to move more people. Irresistibly good bus service is finally coming to Route 8.
Mayor Wilson speaks into a microphone next to Fix the L8 and Seattle Streets Alliance members under a sign that reads "Right Lane: Buses Only, bicycles OK."

important piece of how journalism works right here www.hamiltonnolan.com/p/never-apol...
The Post, a truly immoral scumbag tabloid that is simultaneously the most skilled tabloid journalism publication in America in a way that we can all learn from, ran the story, and then it was picked up over the next few days by other right wing outlets making essentially the same “hey this left winger is a rich kid” joke, and then yesterday the story was picked up by the New York Times, which had profiled Gordillo earlier, and once that happened it instantly became acceptable fodder for non-right-wing reporters and pundits. This is a textbook case of how to shepherd a shallow partisan smear into the mainstream news cycle. You may find it distasteful, but you should admire its efficacy. Any competent cutthroat political communicator must be able to replicate this process on demand.

(When I worked at Gawker, we frequently played a similar but less political role in this general process, by writing about stories that the Times was interested in but considered disreputable, which would then allow them to write follow-ups framed as “People are talking about this thing,” which provides them an entry point to feed their readers salacious news while still maintaining an analytical, hands-off pose. Once you understand this dynamic you will see it all the time.)

Some stores are changing to digital price tags which have cameras in them. They can change the price when they see you coming, and can use the tags to gather data on what they think you are willing to pay.
