In 2020 Lennox urged the Senate to pass the AIM Act "to reduce the consumer's cost to cool their homes." In 2024 it said the equipment that law required would cost 10%-plus more. Today's article covers why your HVAC bill has doubled since 2020. www.worseonpurpose.com/p/why-is-hva...

HVAC Got Worse On Purpose
Private equity bought the largest HVAC contractors. Their playbook pays technicians based on what they sell. Just six companies make most of the units they install.

In 1956 Singer was losing market share to cheaper Japanese machines. It decided to meet this new competition with legalism rather than innovation. It bought a Swiss patent and asked the President to ban the imports. The Supreme Court called it a conspiracy. www.worseonpurpose.com/p/who-makes-...

Singer: The Downfall of a Great American Manufacturer
Singer, Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff are now one company. Only five sewing machine companies actually manufacture anything themselves.

My latest on warranties. Federal law says an outside shop or another company's parts can't void your warranty. Only 9 of 111 warranties I read tell you so. I cover what the law says, plus a letter to send when a claim is denied. Read for free here: www.worseonpurpose.com/p/what-actua...

What Actually Voids Your Warranty?
The law has been on your side since 1975. What to do when a claim is denied anyway.

"Where do you go for product reviews?" is the most common question in my inbox. Today's essay answers it. I cover how reviews are corrupted and the 13 testers I always reference before spending money. www.worseonpurpose.com/p/reviews-yo...

Reviews You Can Trust
A magazine named it Best for Large Rooms. An independent lab bought one and gave it one star. How reviews get bought, and who I trust.

How car ownership got expensive: A mandate is priced by what it costs to fit. Nobody prices what it costs to keep. Automatic braking costs $21 to install. The windshield recalibration it requires costs consumers $3-5bn a year, forever. Essay 2/4 on the American car market: tinyurl.com/4z4xkes6

Cheap To Mandate, Expensive To Own
A $354 million safety rule created a $3 billion annual repair bill. This is how car ownership got expensive.

My latest on supplements. A handful of contract manufacturers make product for thousands of brands. I cover what lab testing found in gummies, what the USP and NSF seals actually mean, and the few brands that are worth your money. Read for free here: www.worseonpurpose.com/p/who-actual...

Most of what determines a product's quality is now invisible to the buyer. Simultaneously, we lost the skill to judge the parts that still show. A quality nobody can detect is a quality nobody pays for, and a quality nobody pays for stops being made. My latest: www.worseonpurpose.com/p/between-cr...

Between Craft and Quality
Why it is so hard to prove that the new version is worse. By way of a five-hundred-year-old cloth inspector, a 1579 fraud file, and Adam Smith.

Ford earns a 3.6% margin building cars. Ford Credit earns 18.8% lending money to buy them. Profit moved off the vehicle itself and into financing, insurance and service. The first of four pieces on the automotive industry. Read free here → www.worseonpurpose.com/p/the-car-go...

The Car Got Better. The Deal Got Worse.
The industry got so good at building cars that it stopped making its money on them.

I write about products getting worse on purpose. Today I wrote down the rules that keep Worse on Purpose from doing the same: no brand money, no affiliates, no investors, no staff. Reader-funded, in public, permanent. Hold me to them. Read here: www.worseonpurpose.com/p/on-indepen...

New piece: who actually makes your running shoes? I went through the filings of every major brand. Two still own their factories. The rest rent from the same small pool of contractors, often with no commitment past the current order. Read here: www.worseonpurpose.com/p/same-shoe-...

New essay: On Quality. What it is, why nobody can define it, and how it gets drained from the things you love. An ode to Pirsig. worseonpurpose.com/p/on-quality

On Quality: What It Is and Why Products Get Worse
Pirsig proved we recognize quality without defining it. Where quality lives, and how companies drain it from your products without a metric moving.

You're at the hardware store buying a hammer. Three hang on the rack. You pick up each one. One of them is better. You know it in seconds. You buy it. "Why did you buy that hammer?" "It was just higher quality" What is quality?

One PE firm owns Pyrex, Corelle, CorningWare, Instant Pot, Anchor Hocking, and Oneida. The pastel Instagram pans lose their nonstick between cooking cycle 30 and 60. A pan measured in months, priced like it's forever. Who owns your kitchen, and what's still worth buying 👇 tinyurl.com/2s3xc53m

Your Cookware Got Worse On Purpose
One buyout firm quietly collected Pyrex, Corelle, Instant Pot, and Oneida. Farberware is a name on a 200-year lease. And the pans still worth buying.
