So this photo contains zero birds, but in my defence, we were sitting outside waiting for birds. But the sun was almost setting and the backlit Snapdragons stole the show!
A backlit snapdragon flower that is partially opened. The background is dark green with a round sun like highlight in the top right corner. It’s actually an out of focus highlight that appears large because it’s a telephoto lens. The pink snapdragon flower is rim lit but has some light bouncing back to light the flower.
For those interested, the lens is a 400mm and required 5 frames focused on slightly different parts of the flower to be stacked together so the entire flower was sharp .

I use AI at my job everyday, it's a requirement. My account was recently reset. I'd had it set to be as impersonal and clinical and terse as I could make it. Like a word calculator. When it was set back to the stock version, I was taken aback at how sycophantic and overly familiar it is.

Jezero Crater, Mars. Photographed Saturday, 29 August 2026.
Rocks and sand litter the foreground. More coherent rock makes up the middle ground. The larger mountain at far right is likely part of the crater rim. Everything has a sort of meh pinky colour.

The sea is filled with weird little guys, but this one is among the weirdest. This is Thetys vagina, named for a sea nymph & the Latin for 'sheath', named before the latter word gained its current usage. Is it a cross between a Gummi bear & a xenomorph? No, it's a 'salp'. (📷: Kayleigh Grant).

A very kind neighbor texted me today about a "sick" crow laying motionless in the yard with its wings outstretched. Because today is the first really hot day of the summer, I knew right away the bird was fine and what was going on. Here's @corvidresearch.bsky.social on what they're doing and why.

Twice a year, Hawai'i experiences a strange moment where the sun appears to be exactly overhead & anything that is completely vertical casts no shadow. Let's learn about Lāhainā Noon, subsolar points & 'Kau ka lā i ka lolo', meaning "the sun rests on the brains."
From a Reddit forum, a photo of a can of coconut milk with a blue label, papyrus text and a flip-top, on a sidewalk. It seems to hover because there's no visible shadow. The pavement is sort of unevenly colored, with bright spots, and the grass along it is green and lush.

Here's a thing that's been quietly blowing my mind this week. This is your entire visual field - how you see the world. Everything within the blue circle is what your conscious mind spends most of its attention on. So what about everything *outside* it? What's going on there? 1/
Diagram showing the entire field of human vision according to angle, with foveal (central) vision only being a very small area at the middle of it, leaving the vast majority to our peripheral vision.

THREAD. A selection of haunting encounters I have had with folk horror creatures and ghosts during walks in the British countryside. You will find the full descriptions of these disturbing incidents in the alt text. 1. Weeping Fence Banshee.
I had heard lots of stories about Maureen The Tea-Loving Fence Banshee in my village but, until the day I took this photo, always dismissed them as the gossip of overimaginative pensioners with too much time on their hands. Hearing the sound of ghostly weeping as we walked down the bridleway, my friend Andrew and I approached this forlorn figure with great trepidation, our hope diminishing with every step that what we could see was merely a creatively discarded shawl and hat and what we could hear was just the wind whistling through the abandoned railway carriages nearby. The situation only became more frightening when, after introducing herself formally and flashing us a mouthful of broken teeth, "Maz" - as she invited us to call her - proceeded to track us for another mile, hopping on her one fencepost leg, waving a 1980s Morphy Richards old kettle at us, and wailing "Does anyone fancy a cup of tea?" until, finally, we managed to give her the slip by nipping into the village pub on the pretext of getting a pint, then swiftly out of an emergency exit I'd scoped out a few weeks early in preparation for sticky moments (an example of folk horror rambler's pre-planning which had seemed neurotic to even me at the time I did it but I was now extremely glad of).

There are almost no crustaceans in the deep ocean. Not because they would get crushed, but because they would DISSOLVE. The cold & high pressure cause changes to water that make it very corrosive to calcium carbonate shells. But there's one crustacean who solves this problem with ALUMINUM ARMOR.

Magnolias evolved before bees existed. 95 million years ago, their ancestors shared the planet with the dinosaurs of the Cretaceous, but no bees. So they made a messy partnership with beetles that continues today & it explains why they're such unusual flowering plants. Let's talk about it.
