For anyone interested in this position, we have campus-wide RTP policies available to review to see what's required for tenure: sjsu-policy-library.policystat.com/policy/20762... There are a host of protections by the CA Faculty Association CBA regarding this process. #digitalhumanities #dh

This is the way. CO got involved in scheduling class mtgs on every campus & requires classes to be assigned based on ## fire marshal will allow in each room. So we get crammed into rooms with face-forward desks only bc that's what will fit the most + no AC in lots of old bldgs on every campus 🥵😵🤦‍♀️

It seems that's not the practice anymore, though. For 14 months, I've been traveling around the world giving talks on my project. I must seem a luddite bc I never lead w/the tools in my talks, even in #DH circles.

Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Let me add that she was a wonderful younger scholar! Her mentors hadn't pointed out this lack, though. For job market talks, it will come across as terrific unless there's a #DH person in the audience to push this query.

Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Yeah, she was on the job market; during Q&A I pushed her to talk abt lack of "Shining" in the corpus & how excluding it was harmful to results. She's a CS BA w/a PHD in lit now, so she didn't study his work & doesn't have the background on his cultural/humanistic relevance. Hmmm....

Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
This happened at another AI #DH mtg where a grad student talked tech but revealed that she used a corpus of Stephen King's work that excluded The Shining bc it wasn't included in vendor corpus. For me, sorta invalidates her results bc it ignores King's impact on development of new literary tropes

Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I *know* that you are careful! But, a lot of these grad students are keen to jump right over ethics discussions & learning tools ASAP. Wondering if being communicated that corpus building = "library" work? Maybe it's addressed in @alanyliu.bsky.social et al Debates Critical infrastructure series?
110
Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
My concern i= these are primarily grad students who don't know how a corpus is constructed & therefore trusts w/o question. Are we skipping that corpus & metadata critical analysis in rush to use cool #digitalhumanities tools? Has it fallen out of favor to teach this part of computational analysis?
210
Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
E/O I've heard at confs all year are working on 19c or earlier texts; it really depends on what has been digitized w/OCR by libraries & it seems these decisions are being driven by what's easily accessible and in good enough concition to be easily digitized. I did push the issue push w/a question
110
Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
A colleague here notes that there's a european org, Computational Humanities Research (CHR), that eschews the #digitalhumanities moniker. In the interest of rushing towards computational analysis, is #dh now turning towards ignoring the gaps/silences/violence of the existing archives?
150
Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Struck by colleagues' work at this conf re use of computational tools, but still seems they're using texts already available, which are primarily canonical -- bc they are readily available in digital forms #dh tools are cool, but are we making a diff in DH by using them only on canonical materials?

Kathy Harris @triproftri.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
So many ways to analyze the literary annual corpus we're preparing -- I know it takes time to create a clean corpus (and a year for the good metadata creation), but I'm so close to being able to do huge analysis of things like translations, txts in multiple titles, Am-Brit-French comparison #dh

Not wanting sabbatical to end, I'm in Paris with the first talk of the Retooling lntertextuality Colloquium. www.item.ens.fr/colloque-int... The best part of my sabbatical was hearing #DH convos around the world -- incredibly helpful as I figure out next steps for this project

🤣The new CSU 9/1 contract went into effect w/o telling anyone that there are new restrictions on use that are fairly severe. IT dude said "we work at the CSU; we all have to make sacrifices" -- dude hasn't been faculty & has been on campus for a whopping 11mnths 🤯😵🤦‍♀️👿 So much for AI Everywhere

Highly recommended reading from my wonderful former colleague at NEH, Molly Hardy. (Related aside: I once asked one of the DOGE boys "who would ever want to work here after what you've done?" To which he replied, "oh, NEH will be so much better soon." Yeah, fuck off.)

🔇 🔇 🔇 My book, Deep Unlearning, is now available for preorders! I don't know how people write so many books because this one took a lot out of me. It turns out, I had a lot to say 😂, with editors cutting out 50k of my words 🫣 ✴️ You can now preorder it at www.simonandschuster.com/books/Deep-U....
Cover of my new book, Deep Unlearning: The Rise of AI and The Radicalization of a Tech Idealist.

There are two concentric circles in the book, the left being circuits in black an white, and the right being a bunch of dots with orange accents. The cover background is cream. And the words are written in black except for "Un" which is in orange.

Big news: I’m back for year 21 at SJSU and stepping into a new role as Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives in H&A. I’ll be building an expanded portfolio around public humanities, partnerships, strategic communications, grants, and the brilliant work already happening across the College.

Feral, Focused, and Back for Year 21: A New Strategic Initiatives Role
I’m back for my twenty-first year at San José State University, returning from sabbatical renewed and reinvigorated, though still a little feral from so much wonderful time to wander intellectually. I’m also returning to a new role in the College of Humanities and the Arts as Executive Director of Strategic Initiatives, which means I get to spend this year helping good work become more visible, more connected, and more durable across the College.

For this project, the crowdsourcing is not necessarily a feature I need. I need machine generated OCR that retains the page structure and from the page is the only platform that does this. It's so exciting!

The Longer Way Around a Digital Humanities Project I committed to taking a full year of sabbatical because I knew this project needed more intellectual space than I could give it while managing the day-to-day work of my Director position.
