I don't write a list of rules for applications, because I also don't run my business like that. I am not gonna spoon-feed you the solution to every task. You need to figure out how to best handle yourself. I'm looking for an independent worker who I can trust to run my cafe. Act like it.

I don't even need to get into the problems of being spammed by bots, applicants who didn't read the job posting, or actual spam. My issues are with applications from people who COULD be good for the job, but who have sabotaged themselves with simple mismanagement of technology.

5) Let your personality show in your application. Even a tiny business is going to get 150 applications. 90% of them are perfectly qualified. If your resume looks exactly like everyone else's, my eyes glaze over. I am looking for what stands out. Tell me your hobbies. Extra-curriculars. ANYTHING.

Trident Booksellers & Cafe @tridenthalifax.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
4) PUT A SUBJECT LINE ON YOUR EMAIL! If your email looks like spam, I will delete it, full stop. I get dozens if not hundreds of emails a day. Don't get lost by looking like junk.

Trident Booksellers & Cafe @tridenthalifax.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
3) PUT IDENTIFYING INFO IN YOUR FILE NAME! The minute I download your cv, it has been separated from your email. It the file is called "Resume (4).docx" I have no idea who it belongs to and cannot easily pull it up. I am not going to rename your file for you.

Trident Booksellers & Cafe @tridenthalifax.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
2) When emailing your resume, make sure it is in a format that anyone can read. Not an .eml or .html file. Nothing over 1MB. And not a flippin' jpg or png! Those files are enormous and I can't select the txt in them. Come on.

1) DON'T COME IN AND GIVE ME A PAPER RESUME. I don't know where you think these are going. A basket on my big, oak desk? A filing cabinet? When was the last time you saw a filing cabinet? Or a desk? Or an OFFICE? Guys, a resume is data & data is on computers. Email me. A sheet of paper is no good.

But there are still things people do that make it so irritating for me to handle their applications that I am very tempted to just toss them out unread. So, listen: here are some things that I, personally, as a small business owner want to see/not see in job applications. Ymmv. 🧵

Hiring is frustrating. Applying for jobs is frustrating. I try to be as flexible as possible, put up as few barriers as possible, and genuinely just find people who look like a good fit for my business. I don't have an HR team and I don't use any tools. I definitely don't involve AI. 🧵

If you heard a banshee cry this morning, it was me. A FATE WORSE THAN DROWNING, 3 weeks after release, is OFFICIALLY A USA TODAY BESTSELLER DEBUTING AT #117!! I was floored when I saw the list. I may have made a noise that was not appropriate given I was at my day job. I'm a bestseller!!! 😭😭😭
