Delighted to see the @nuffieldfoundation.org funding our real-time work to understand how firms are responding to the ongoing energy supply disruptions and what this means for the wider economy. This is joint work with @trfetzer.com, @christinavpalmou.bsky.social and @iyotzov.bsky.social. 1/2

How are firms responding to the ongoing oil price shock, and how does their response differ from the one to the 2021-2022 gas price shock? Read our @theifs.bsky.social comment to find out: ifs.org.uk/articles/how... 1/2

How are UK firms responding to the ongoing oil supply disruptions? | Institute for Fiscal Studies
New evidence shows the current energy crisis has affected fewer firms than in 2022; two months in, exposed firms responded mainly by raising prices.

Headline findings: in the first two months, affected firms increase prices and inventories. This is based on joint work with @trfetzer.com, @christinavpalmou.bsky.social and @iyotzov.bsky.social, now also out as a revised working paper: ifs.org.uk/publications... 2/2

Very nice work here by some former colleagues: firms that export are mostly more productive *before* they export (ie it's a selection effect), but they do also become a bit more productive once they are exporting.

In light of this natural disaster, I am happy to share a new paper with @prashantgarg.bsky.social that aims to shed light on a phenomena of patterns in transnational & dyadic media coverage around "events". To me this is the best way to study many geopolitical phenomena these days. What do we do?

There seems to be widespread recognition that bad facts are bad news, and, despite skepticism, there is an enduring thirst for reliable information. The question is, where can it be found, and how can its purveyors make themselves heard amid the noise?

Birth timing and spacing: Implications for parental leave dynamics and child penalties
Estimates of the impact of having children on labour market outcomes can differ significantly depending on whether a parent is categorised as employed or non-employed during parental leave. This column uses data from Denmark to explore how parental leave dynamics relate to the timing and spacing of births and subsequent labour market outcomes. The findings reveal notable disparities in birth timing and spacing based on maternal education levels. These dynamics complicate the estimation of the child penalty and its effects on gender gaps in labour market outcomes.
