I love the scene in Contact when she hears the signal and the next five minutes is everybody yelling (authentic) radio astronomy stuff at each other. It's only when James Woods shows up in the next scene and asks "what does this mean" that they explain any of it in laymen's terms.

More on-topic answer: Dark Winds, the show I've been on for several seasons, is set in the early 70s - before most of our writers were even born. Last season I noticed "couch surfing" in a script early enough to get it changed before shooting. Nah, child. We didn't have that expression in 1972.

Not "historical", but - re: the stock Oh No Which Wire To Cut To Disarm The Nuke scene... Cut any wire. Cut all the wires. Or just rip out a handful. You're good. I learned this from an Air Force guy who literally disarmed nukes. They're designed to be HARD to detonate. Any malfunction=no boom.

Dunno if it's my fave - and maybe not "action" the way we usually mean it - but the scene in U-571 where the US crew has to dive and fire torpedoes in a broken U-boat they were going to scuttle is a great example of sustained tension. Plus bits of comedy because they can't read any of the controls.
