it appears that @bsky.app have suspended the account of @jessiegender because a trans person saying "I wish ill on JK Rowling" is against the rules, so let me say with my loud cis voice that I too wish ill on all perpetrators of hate speech against trans people reinstate Jessie, this is ridiculous

Visually impairment is a wide spectrum. Sometimes it's just nice to know the colours, sometimes something needs to be pointed out because there isn't enough contrast, sometimes people just want to know what's in the picture. ALT-text isn't easy, but it helps.
A guide to writing ALT-text
there is a photo of a capybara chilling in the water.
Around it is descriptive text describing the photo (colour, expression, description, identify who, interesting features)

I get that people are deeply annoyed by iNat right now, but despite its deep flaws, I hope people can see that a better iNat, both the site functionality and the community, is worth fighting for. Here's my personal perspective.

Jackdaw with exaggerated iridescent colours. This might be the loosest I've we've managed to paint. Letting go of that tight control is so hard!

Colossal’s bungled wolf announcement isn’t a conservation win. It’s a sad reminder of how the offensively rich want to foist their vision of the future on everyone. My latest for @slate.com

Those Dire Wolves Aren’t an Amazing Scientific Breakthrough. They’re a Disturbing Symbol of Where We’re Heading.
We shouldn’t be celebrating “de-extinction.” We should be focused on the species that are currently in danger.

Tip: before you put whole sentences in all caps, please consider: My screen reader has difficulty distinguishing words from acronyms when everything is capitalised. It often reads out words letter by letter. If you wanna get across the all-caps-ness in an image, note the formatting in ur alt text.

This is actually a huge factor in American politics. Americans generally overestimate minority groups and underestimate majority groups by huge margins: today.yougov.com/politics/art...
Americans overestimate the size of minority groups and underestimate the size of most majority groups
Estimated proportions are calculated by averaging weighted responses (ranging from 0% to 100%, rounded to the nearest whole percentage) to the question "If you had to guess, what percentage of American adults..." True proportions were drawn from a variety of sources, including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and polls by YouGov and other polling firms.
