It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

I'm reading New Grub Street, by George Gissing (who was very handsome and a bit of a cad). It's very good but its denunciation of the popular novels and journals of the time makes me nostalgic for the days when everyone read them for fun instead of watching and scrolling.

This is *the* main continuity between neo-fascism and the 20th Century variety. Erich Fromm argued exactly this in "Escape From Freedom," saying that modernity left many alienated and socially dislocated--and fascist strongmen promised to restore meaning and purpose to their lives.
