PFI is back – and it will be at cost to us all
The FT has reported this morning that: The government has sounded out private finance investors about backing up to 200 neighbourhood health centres, in a move that could transform NHS care in England...

PFI was never really about efficiency or innovation. It was about neoliberal ideology. It allowed politicians to shrink the visible size of the state, hide public debt, and hand guaranteed profits to the private sector. The public will still be paying the bill for decades to come

If we are serious about rebuilding this country, the lesson is obvious. The state must invest directly in its own future. Anything else is smoke, mirrors and private gain at public expense. And yet, Wes Streeting appears to be intent on reviving this failed model. Why is that? Follow the money

NHS becoming a shell doling out contracts to private sector. Cataract surgery contracts have profit margins of 32% - 43%, leaves less for other NHS services. Govts won't expand NHS capacity. Neighbourhood Health Centres to be handed to private sector. State sponsored profiteering.

Owners of collapsed oil refinery Prax Lindsey took £11.5m in pay & dividends. Workers will suffer. UK law on dividends is a mess, easily circumvented, as shown by BHS/Carillon, water companies. No central enforcer of company law, auditors ineffective. No corporate governance reform in sight.

Also vital: how exactly the "concessions" are presented to Parliament. So far, Labour have gone with variations of: "We would have punched much harder, but have been forced to stay our hand for now by troublesome rebels. We still believe in the moral case for punching."

Corporate Welfare. UK govts subsidise gas, oil, wind, solar, coal, biomass companies with cash and/or tax breaks. Free cash. No means testing. No equity stake, nothing repayable. Since 2020, 20 energy companies made operating profit of £514bn, shareholders enriched. We get big energy/tax bills.
