If you're in the area, the fall colors in Stevens Pass are beautiful. It's a great time for a railway history hike before the snows arrive. The Old Cascade Tunnel is closed due to flash flood danger on the west side, but you can still walk up to the portal on the east end!
A steep slope covered in deciduous plants with a few trees. The leaves are turning fiery shades of red and orange.A sign posted at the end of the current trail near the west portal of the Old Cascade Tunnel. It warns of the extreme danger of flash floods due to water building up behind a section of collapsed tunnel. The east portal of the Old Cascade Tunnel. It is hidden away in foliage, but still easily accessible once you find the path. There is a fence placed over the entrance to discourage trespassers, but a hole has been cut through it. A photo taken through the hole in the fence in the previous photo. The ground beyond is mucky and unpleasant looking. The tunnel has a perfectly U-shaped ceiling that extends into the darkness.

Unless you know in advance, you may not realize the gravity of the structure you're stepping into when you visit the half mile long concrete snow shed in Wellington. That's how wide the avalanche was. That IS the avalanche site. #NRM #TrainMuseum #Wellington #StevensPass #localhistory #avalanches
The start of the snowshed is a gentle downward slope with railings. It curves off to the left in the distance, outlined by concrete arches. The far end of the snowshed arcs slightly to the right where it is starting to collapse. The foreground of the photo is a straight shot with the archways outlining the pathway. One of the interpretive signs along the trail through the snow shed that touches on the disaster and lists the names of those who died in the avalanche.

Did you know the scenic Old Pipeline Bed Trailhead near Leavenworth is the site of a historic Great Northern-built power station? Water from the nearby Tumwater Dam ran generators to power electric locomotives through tunnels and snow sheds in Stevens Pass, including at Wellington! #NRM #TrainMuseum
A picturesque view of a blue river with large boulders on either side. The foreground is framed in leaves outlined in gold and orange with green still in the middle. In the background, a red bridge still stands. The bridge held a wooden penstock which carried water from the Historic Tumwater Dam over to the power station.

Meanwhile, this photo from the same evening looks almost ominous with the coaches fading into the night...
Spokane, Portland & Seattle coaches 213 and 218 out at night. It's so dark that you can't even fully make out the tops of the cars. The photo is taken from under a bright streetlamp and the interior lights of the coaches are visible, but everything else is just darkness.

Fall keeps trying to greet us, even if summer doesn't seem to want to let go just yet. It's getting darker earlier and bringing some welcome rain! The perfect time of year for a cozy train ride. #NRM #TrainMuseum #trainrides #railroad #railway #museums #PNW #snoqualmie #northbend

These little guys like to wiggle their way into the exhibit hall in the fall, which is not great. While the caterpillars are harmless to people, adult moths can be incredibly damaging to textiles in any museum's collection. These little trespassers get collected and moved back outside. :)
Sometimes there are a LOT of them. This literal handful was collected during a single closing walkthrough of the Train Shed Exhibit Hall.
Image of a hand holding an indeterminate number of curled up fuzzy orange and black wooly bear caterpillars. The number was about 8-10, in actuality.

#WildlifeWednesdays? More like WOOLY BEAR WEDNESDAYS! We've spotted the first of the season around here! These are fuzzy and thankfully harmless to handle. They have no spines or irritating hairs - unlike other fuzzy caterpillar species in the country. #NRM #TrainMuseum #bugs #moths #caterpillars

While piecing together full-size mockups for an exhibit in progress, I keep getting phantom whiffs of potato. I swear it was happening even before I started to put together the potato panel. 😂
Taped together printouts of an extended length exhibit panel. A giant pile of potatoes is in the foreground. In the background, the word Potatoes is there, slightly out of focus.

This week, Kelsi Umeko released the trailer for her film "I Am American", which tells the story of a Japanese-American family during World War II. The Museum was honored to help bring this underrepresented part of history to life. #IAmAmerican #WWII #NRM #TrainMuseum #history

To put equipment back on track, the process is the same, just reversed! For a more recent #ThrowbackThursday, here's Locomotive 125 arriving at the Museum! For safe and expedient movement, not to mention the weight capacity, two cranes are required to fully suspend a locomotive like this.
Northern Pacific diesel-electric locomotive 125, still wearing its Port of Longview 770 colors, suspended between two large cranes. In the foreground on the rails, the locomotives trucks are already in place.

Rather than do a long, tedious dance to maneuver a second 80+ foot-long trailer through our gate, we took advantage of the crane being here to speed up that process and carried the trucks over the fence to their awaiting truck trailer too!
Orange spreader attachment on the crane being secured to safely lift the car's trucks. The trucks now a few feet off the ground while an assistant keeps it stable. The trucks suspended even higher now as they get the trailer into position on the outside of the fence. Both trucks now on the trailer, chained down and being fully secured for transport!

The Northwest Railway Museum - Snoqualmie - North Bend, WA @trainmuseum.bsky.social · 27/08/2026
The Museum's track no longer connects to any main lines, so we can't ship equipment by rail. It all has to come via trucks. But how in the world do you get a train car onto a trailer? BIG trucks with even BIGGER cranes! #NRM #TrainMuseum #railroads #trains
Massive crane in the parking lot of the Railway History Campus, it is carrying a truck trailer to place it near the tracks. Rather than maneuvering the trailer through the gate, we moved it with the crane over the fence to expedite the process! The Silver Bullet suspended on one end by the crane. The trucks have been rolled out from underneath on this end so the car is just free-floating.Later in the process, the front half of the trailer is backed into place by the truck driver while the crane keeps the front half of the car in the air.

The Museum organizes the parade, but somehow hasn't been IN it for years. We changed that this year, the Museum's Pettibone brought up the rear of the parade! It then gave festival goers another surprise with its return trip via rail. ;) #NRM #TrainMuseum #maintenanceofway #railroads #equipment
