Recently, a member of staff went down a research rabbit hole, as you do, and found a scan of an intact copy of the calendar! Turns out the dog may have been mistaken for part of Santa's beard or wardrobe... Oops! The artist refuses to apologize for the crime on the right.

When restoring the Chapel Car, Museum staff found a piece of a Santa-themed calendar stuck into the boards of the ceiling. The worn bits of paper were positioned in a way that made sense to staff at the time, then scanned for archival purposes. #NRM #TrainMuseum #archives #history #ChapelCar

Torn pieces of a "Santa Claus Calendar" pulled from the ceiling of Chapel Car 5 Messenger of Peace during its rehabilitation work. It is heavily yellowed/brown with age. The pieces are positioned so that it appears Santa is waving. Under the Northwest Railway Museum watermark, the year 1907 can just barely be made out.

Belated #WildlifeWednesdays: The Museum recently started to put up new window decals to help further reduce bird-strikes. We've focused on observed problem areas and used pleasant plant-motif decals. Can you identify some of the native plant species depicted in the decals? #NRM #TrainMuseum #PNW

A dusty window with a clear imprint from a bird strike. In this case, the bird had thankfully been able to fly away.

The Train Shed Exhibit Hall roll-up door windows with the Story Walk on the lower row and the leaf decals on the next two rows up. One of the new, blue picnic tables sits between the doors. The now-decorated rows are the windows that reflect the most forest, thus the ones the birds would fly into most frequently.

If you're in the area, the fall colors in Stevens Pass are beautiful. It's a great time for a railway history hike before the snows arrive. The Old Cascade Tunnel is closed due to flash flood danger on the west side, but you can still walk up to the portal on the east end!

Unless you know in advance, you may not realize the gravity of the structure you're stepping into when you visit the half mile long concrete snow shed in Wellington. That's how wide the avalanche was. That IS the avalanche site. #NRM #TrainMuseum #Wellington #StevensPass #localhistory #avalanches

The start of the snowshed is a gentle downward slope with railings. It curves off to the left in the distance, outlined by concrete arches.

The far end of the snowshed arcs slightly to the right where it is starting to collapse. The foreground of the photo is a straight shot with the archways outlining the pathway.

One of the interpretive signs along the trail through the snow shed that touches on the disaster and lists the names of those who died in the avalanche.

Water from the nearby Tumwater Dam ran generators to power electric locomotives through tunnels and snow sheds in Stevens Pass, including at Wellington! #NRM #TrainMuseum

These little guys like to wiggle their way into the exhibit hall in the fall, which is not great. While the caterpillars are harmless to people, adult moths can be incredibly damaging to textiles in any museum's collection. These little trespassers get collected and moved back outside. :)

Sometimes there are a LOT of them. This literal handful was collected during a single closing walkthrough of the Train Shed Exhibit Hall.

Rather than do a long, tedious dance to maneuver a second 80+ foot-long trailer through our gate, we took advantage of the crane being here to speed up that process and carried the trucks over the fence to their awaiting truck trailer too!

The Museum's track no longer connects to any main lines, so we can't ship equipment by rail. It all has to come via trucks. But how in the world do you get a train car onto a trailer? BIG trucks with even BIGGER cranes! #NRM #TrainMuseum #railroads #trains

Massive crane in the parking lot of the Railway History Campus, it is carrying a truck trailer to place it near the tracks. Rather than maneuvering the trailer through the gate, we moved it with the crane over the fence to expedite the process!

The Silver Bullet suspended on one end by the crane. The trucks have been rolled out from underneath on this end so the car is just free-floating.

Later in the process, the front half of the trailer is backed into place by the truck driver while the crane keeps the front half of the car in the air.

A Douglas squirrel munching on a seed cone. It is balanced on a thin branch. It is a dark brown with an orange-hued belly. This species is known for being very vocal and yelling/squeaking endlessly at anyone it perceives as a threat or a trespasser, so it is unusual to have one calmly eating a snack with humans standing only a few feet below.
