Merging school districts was supposed to save taxpayers money. It didn’t, a 20-year study in Arkansas found
When Mike Huckabee was the Arkansas governor in 2004, he wanted government to be more efficient. He signed a law to shut down tiny school districts with fewer than 350 students. Over the next decade, 85 school districts merged with others, triggering the closure of 105 schools, most of them high schools. Families and teachers protested. Some students had bus rides so long that they couldn't participate in sports and other after-school activities. A 2022 study found that the mergers had accelerated depopulation in rural communities and depressed property values; that same year another study found almost no…

I would like the current Teach for America CEO to stop talking about AI and TFA as a “first job” to prepare for the AI economy. It is creepy. His recent interviews stopped me from registering for the summit (I was on the fence).

Dr. Horton pleads guilty Monday morning, about 30 minutes before our board meeting where we are scheduled to hire Dr. Sauce. Oh hey, look at that. The article about all these crimes that I sent the Board before they fired him is an exhibit for the government!

The Hawthorne students moving to Briarlake are actually Oak Grove students. If you put their addresses in the locator, that is correct. The map is wrong. I don’t know how many total students it is. I reported it, but these plans are outdated at this point (they are working on next scenario).

The plea agreement with Samuel Ross was damning. Does this mean we can stop “disrupting”?

Tracy @tracybrisson.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
Samuel Ross turned on Horton and pled guilty. Recommended sentencing is 37-48 months. Hearing for other 3 defendants tomorrow morning.

I missed it on the chart! I am in a district that has NO tracking except the stand alone program. Will use that in my conversations. Thanks!

Also… until our district published live-in students as part of redistricting, I was naive how few families send their kids to public school in my area, especially middle school. We have one of the top performing elementary schools in the whole state.

Systemically, how do we get more than 36% proficient in MS? Individually, how do parents know their kids needs are met? Collectively, how do we manage this to also not impact enrollment? (3/3)

We were told the only advanced MS learning path is the dual language program that starts at another elementary school. Admissions stop at grade 1. There are 2 Carnegie courses for grade 8, but that is it? My son scored 98%ile on his math standardized tests. Only 36% are proficient at his MS. (2/x)

Really good piece. As a parent and someone in the middle of redistricting conversations/reader of NHJ, I am curious why academic tracking was not here- I don’t know what quadrant it would be in, but it is top of parents’ minds. We had a rising 6th grader meeting… (1/x)

In news on our indicted former superintendent: One of his co-defendants, Samuel Ross, is changing his plea from not-guilty. Ross’ texts with Horton were published by the government. The joke is the work was fake. Can’t imagine why he would try to avoid trial. 👊🏻🥂

Listened to the This American Life with Nikole Hannah-Jones and have some of the same takeaways. (1) All this is taking place in a school district that is majority Hispanic and that is not mentioned in article or episode. (2) NHJ cannot distinguish between educational neglect & customer service.

I am looking forward to listening. We are currently redistricting and this piece came at an opportune time. Our current planning team says new magnets are unreasonable. The NHJ piece indicates we should revisit this. Redistricting should serve operational goals AND educational goals.

PTAs are chapters of the National PTA and have rules around fundraising. PTOs and school foundations don’t. Generally when districts have tried a redistribution model, the moms stop fundraising/donations dry up. The motivation is not there for all that free labor & lack of control on purchasing.

Can’t stop thinking of this! I guess I don’t see advoxacy for other children in the story? The parents at PS307 actually got the principal replaced after Hannah-Jones left. This is advocacy. Messy advocacy, but still. Of course, principal was moved to central. www.change.org/p/please-hel...

(6) This is rooted in her experience, but NYCDOE is 42% Hispanic compared to 19% Black and those students are way more segregated by geography and language. Weird not to include that perspective as part of such a big think piece. (5/5)

(4) Enrollment maintenance & growth is the way forward for public schools because high enrollment keeps $$ in the system. That is achieved by quality, reputation & yes, a little catering to white residents. (5) In places like GA, Black parents @ schools like PS307 are leaving with vocuhers. (4/x)

(3) The MS principal in this story should not be a principal. She is a worse problem than school choice. She is as indifferent as the elementary school principal. She is just nice about it. That Hannah-Jones does not see that is part of her argument’s issue. (3/x)

(1) The original piece, this one & Nice White Parents miss that the levers of school districts and municipalities are managed by faceless bureaucrats. They are the institution. (2) They don’t care about white parents either. But they align with parents who make their jobs easier. (2/x)

The government’s case against our indicted superintendent dropped last night. Trial starts 10/21. Here is a text of him and his friend laughing about stealing from kids via a no-show contract. About half (?) of the kickbacks only started AFTER he accepted the job with DCSD.

When I went through my mom’s stuff after she passed away, I found my junior year fall tuition bill for Syracuse. I lived off campus at my sorority house. My Stafford paid for that, leaving my parents’ balance to be $34. I left college with $12k in student loans, mostly for housing. Different time!

I went to Syracuse on very close to full scholarship. Turned down BU & Northeastern (full ride) because they were not well ranked and 1/2 my class was going to Northeatern. Things change. But a lot is tied to sports. I have a masters from NYU. My Syracuse education was 10x better.
