This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

On shared governance of universities. Which, it's worth remembering, is how European universities began: as self-governing organizations of scholars, who students could pay to learn from. Not as employees of anyone else, not as servants to a board of regents or CEO.

Yep, and I fear corps will further limit physical media. And it is a different experience for sure. I never liked the binging aspect, like it turns it into junk food. Whereas the act of choosing a physical item from the library, bringing it home, planning to watch it, etc., it's more special.

Pritzker: So here’s the truth, plain and simple: Our state is under siege. Not by protesters, immigrants, the deep state, the press, Canada or Mexico or Greenland, Antifa or Jewish space lasers or pride parades. No. Our state's under siege by a petty, corrupt man in Washington.

Anyway, your problem isn‘t finding the time to take notes. The problem is that taking notes is thinking and thinking has to be done by someone. women have been doing a lot of metacognition that looks like a task when it’s really thinking.

‘Say yes and never do it’ Mel Brooks knew how to deal with the studios
You have some wonderful stories of basically getting away with stuff at the studios.

I’d learned one very simple trick: say yes. Simply say yes. Like Joseph E. Levine, on “The Producers,” said, “The curly-haired guy—he’s funny looking. Fire him.” He wanted me to fire Gene Wilder. And I said, “Yes, he’s gone. I’m firing him.” I never did. But he forgot. After the screening of “Blazing Saddles,” the head of Warner Bros. threw me into the manager’s office, gave me a legal pad and a pencil, and gave me maybe twenty notes. He would have changed “Blazing Saddles” from a daring, funny, crazy picture to a stultified, dull, dusty old Western. He said, “No farting.” I said, “It’s out.”That’s probably the most famous scene in the movie, the campfire scene.

I know. He said, “You can’t punch a horse.” I said, “You’ll never see it again.” I kept saying, “You’re absolutely right. It’s out!” Then, when he left, I crumpled up all his notes, and I tossed it in the wastepaper basket. And John Calley, who was running [production at] Warner Bros. at the time, said, “Good filing.” That was the end of it. You say yes, and you never do it.

That’s great advice for life.

It is. Don’t fight them. Don’t waste your time struggling with them and trying to make sense to them. They’ll never understand.

“Earnestness is cringe” is just the mirror image of “cynicism is savvy” and the matching partner to “lol nothing matters” which is the fertile ground for fascism to grow. Hope is cringe. Progress is cringe. Change is cringe. Getting together with other people and imagining something better? Cringe.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

Whatever Platner did or didn’t do, pay attention to how quickly conversations about sexual and physical violence against women turn into “aw shucks” meditations on second chances in a way almost no other harms do. What you frame as deserving of grace tells me who you believe should absorb the cost.

There are rules, and there is justice. They will do anything to make you believe that these are one and the same: if it was not just, it would not be the rule. But you and I know that rules and justice run on separate tracks, and if you want both, you have to MAKE them ride in the same car.
