The bride just came round with spare wedding flowers to apologise for the noise! Obviously she had no need to apologise given we opened the windows to hear it more clearly 😁

I think this is the best shot of a Mourning Warbler that I've ever managed, taken in May during spring migration. #birds #birding
A closeup photo of a mourning warbler perched on a bare branch, with blurred out green as the backdrop. He is in profile view, but has turned his head to look over his shoulder to the left. He has pink legs and feet, a lemon yellow belly, olive greenish-gray back, black bib, and gray hood. A gorgeous bird striking a beautiful pose!

Currently visiting Portugal and our apartment is opposite a wedding venue. I'm pleased to report that wedding bands are the same everywhere - just finished a Michael Jackson medley and launched straight into Jamiroquai. Now onto Play That Funky Music. Surely it's time for Dexy's Midnight Runners?

Had to pay my car insurance provider to cancel my policy after I sold my car 🙄 I was due a refund of £20 for the month of unused coverage, but their cancellation fee is £50 so I had to pay them £30 for the privilege of not being insured. How is this allowed? Shouldn't it taper / cancel out?

The Abbey Road reference made me recall a time when someone, I think it was you, tried to work out how many people had gone to the DLR station when they meant to go to the recording studio and used an FOI to find out how many journeys there had been from Abbey Road to Maida Vale tube.

Sorry, I am probably more interested in this than is strictly normal, but seeing as though we *have* gov.uk it seems weird it's not used more routinely for information security - that there's not a verifiable chain from the SMS or app alert back to a single authority page on the government Web site

Did anyone else dislike the noise so much that you closed the alert before you'd read it? I didn't even have the presence of mind to screenshot it, just read the first line then mashed the close button to make The Loud go away

The polio vaccine, once given on a sugar cube in the UK, has helped protect millions from a life changing disease. Thanks to the NHS vaccination programme, polio is now extremely rare in the UK. Vaccination works. ✅

Went to view the eclipse at a quiet spot in the Peak District, but half of Derbyshire had the same plan 😬 Took this photo of the roads jammed with cars. Nice atmosphere though - mostly families with pinhole projectors/eclipse glasses but a few ambitious people hiked up with telescopes!

My daughter has finished her first year of her PhD at Cambridge. Her end of year report (not public) is fascinating. She's a health data science researcher. What I'm seeing, as someone who knows data at government level is that the NHS data she needs doesn't exist. And it's weird.

🧵On @thenewsagents.co.uk yesterday, school closures and the lab leak theory were offered as two examples of legitimate questions that were hard to ask. Both have in fact been asked constantly since 2020. But here's a thread on why I think they were wrong and dangerous on school closures 1/12

I actually know the answer to this and it's slightly insane. Google pulls from Wikipedia to determine if a place is a city, town, neighbourhood, whatever. Brighton's first line describes it as a "seaside resort" so Google Maps thinks it's a neighbourhood and doesn't display it in the "city" font.

Oh wow that's big news. There's the whole Science Park in Stevenage that hosts GSK. One small saving grace - at least they're on the same train line so commuting might be doable. I can also see how concentrating science research around Cambridge makes sense as a national strategy.

Who keeps buying these lights? And WHY? Why must I sit in your living room and be subjected to a blinding spotlight shining directly at me? And so many of them pointing in every direction, I can't escape! The Big Light in any room is bad enough without feeling like I'm being interrogated

“What a beautiful universe, hon" says a telescope as gazes upon an aurora borealis. “It really is”, responds the telescope's partner, who it turns out is not a telescope, but a microscope. Hands full of algae, she wades waist deep in a disgusting swamp, amazed by the heavenly microscopic life all around them.

I'd never say no to a holodeck episode, but this feels like the perfect opportunity for Detective Data to happen in the real world! Alternatively if you can work in an opportunity for Picard to play some sort of flute/panpipe object then that would also be acceptable

It's sad to see, even though I like a good quiz show! I assume quizzes are relatively cheap to make - a few researchers, studio crew, a host and the same set each time? Compared to a production that needs writers, several sets and paid actors.
