idle thoughts on open source and community in the age of AI oss has always been a real “the medium is the message” sort of thing. distributed ownership and distributed development have been a part of free software for decades. the collab tools shaped the community, tho.

I’m using Claude to build a Boxing simulation, in the spirit of old Championship Manager games 🥊 I’m thinking of making it so that agents can ‘play’ with one another. Have Opus 4.8 and GPT-5.6 Sol disagree on some PR review? Make them duke it out! 👊

Obligatory SWE/LLM tangent. Agents can create any kind of project. Give it the spec to Prometheus and a couple of thousand $ and they’ll crank out an even more efficient and secure codebase, I do believe it. But a healthy, OSS ecosystem that stands the test of time? Hell no

One example is “The Expanse” book series. I really feel that the authors _try_ to emulate this thickness, but it’s in the form of factoids, sparse descriptions and repeating “hard sci-fi”, but it’s like a chicken drumstick — all sauce and no meat.

Protobuf with reflection for self-describing APIs has worked great for us. Small enough calls and leaving it up to agents to compose them into ‘smarter’ flows or write up skills, has been a great lightweight alternative to MCPs
