I may not have a job and everything is terrible BUT my book (which I nearly gave up on, see above) just went into production. Following a decade of work 'Uncovering the Star Wars World: The Land, Labour and Nature of a Media Empire' will be out in May 2027. Excitement! Relief! And... copy editing.

Film critic gets called out for flirting with a minor and using the N-word so posts a video threatening self-harm to gain sympathy, but because they’re a person “who matters”, Film Twitter rallies around them. Changes their name and “comes out” as non-binary a bit later.

This is singlehandedly one of the strangest stories I've ever worked on for @londonermag.bsky.social It took months of investigating to uncover, and is a saga of luxury dog groomers, mummified cats and a mysterious Essex builder who ended up secretly running east London's hottest lesbian bar.

A small cabal of anti-Enlightenment fascists has us outgunned in the “marketplace of ideas,” and not because their ideas are good. You can’t defeat racism with facts and logic. The only way to stop people like Cofnas (or Rufo or Fuentes or whoever) is through terror. Make them afraid.

A lot of projection from Rose here. I have tried to be charitable and gotten this level of scorn and reactive anger. Some open-minded curiosity about my position could have done something to build bridges, but she clearly isn't interested in that. What proximity to media industries does to a brain.

1.) you are employed and presumably paid for your labour at GLP. 2.) being a public-facing campaigner is a choice, whereas most of the trauma we face is thrust upon trans people (trans women especially) in both public and private spheres.

I agree. However, vast swathes of the British public relish in cruelty and violence; it just has to be the state-sanctioned kind. Just because we don’t want guns doesn’t mean that our country doesn’t posses a similarly pornographic desire for morally-sanctioned violence.

Posted about Tony Rayns on my Insta
Tony Rayns’ passing has left me with mixed feelings.
Anyone in the Anglosphere with a serious interest in East Asian cinema has benefitted from his work over the decades. Myself included. It was because of his writing on Hu Bo's An Elephant Sitting Still that got me to seek out a screening at EIFF in 2018.
That being said, when I attended CineRedis in 2022 I was warned about him by another attendee (do not dm me asking for more details). I suppose this can just be dismissed as unsubstantiated rumour since I did not inquire further, but the social scene around film festivals has taught me to take such warnings seriously.
Another point I would add is that I think it hurts anglophone conversations about cinema from other regions when a single voice assumes such authority over a long period of time. Their biases and prejudices can be normalised as objective truth statements which can lead to the neglect of certain works and close off alternative perspectives. That isn't necessarily Rayns' fault as it is more to do with the culture of institutions.
I'm not seeking to denigrate a man who has just died, I just want to remain critically honest.

The assumption that some audience don’t get it is somewhat naive. A disingenuous viewer can simply not care about the critique and incorporate the aesthetic pleasure into their personal identity. Eg. Clavicular and American Psycho or the mansophere and Wolf of Wall Street

Reading a biography of Walter Bagehot and am heartened to learn an historical enemy was a snitch and a loser as a student.
Excerpt from p.38 of The Spare Chancellor by Alastair Buchan

text: But within a fortnight of his arrival he had encountered a more serious problem than homesickness. One of his fellow boarders was carrying on some connection with a woman at a time when Dr. Hoppus supposed him to be either in chapel or in college, and Bagehot gathered from his conversation that he was about to lead a second youth astray. He sat down after several sleepless nights and wrote his father:
Now certainly I feel that it cannot be my duty to allow this state of things to continue ... yet the office of tale bearer is so invidious, and in general so contemptible that I confess I am exceedingly loath to undertake it ... This certainly must be stopped and I possess no other means of doing so, but informing Dr. Hoppus immediately.
This he proceeded to do with the results which he had expected. His companions were furious with him, and Dr.
Hoppus with the boys, who were immediately dismissed from his house. It reveals at the same time moral courage, a strong sense of right and duty, together with something which could be either officiousness or an overdeveloped fastidiousness. "It is my first taste of the troubles of life," he wrote to his father. "Henceforth I shall perhaps never be wholly free from them."

The ditching of journalists from the UK's biggest gay magazine, including their trans reporter, shouldn't be surprising. Mainstream news media is not the bastion against fascism it claims to be, it inevitably turns toward profit, power, and - in the UK - transphobia. Shame on Pink News.
