Happy Michaelmas! In some parts of Ireland on this day, rent could be paid in geese. If you’re due to pay rent this month, please consider setting a very irritated goose on your landlord in lieu of payment, in the name of upholding important Irish traditions.
A drawing of mine of a goose looking concerned, with a tag around its neck that reads "This month's rent, with thanks".

Chambered nautilus study
Photo of a painting of a chambered nautilus in green-blue water. The nautilus is dark red, pale orange and white with blue shadows. The shell is striped, counter shaded so it's darker on top and lighter on the bottom. The painting rests on a wood table, and a paintbrush is visible in the upper left corner.

NASA Astronomy Hourly Picture - 2002-06-02: Cracks and Ridges on Europa #Astronomy #NASA #Space
Which way to the interstate? What appears to be a caricature of a complex highway system on Earth is actually a system of ridges and cracks on the icy surface of Jupiter's moon Europa. The distance between parallel ridges in the above photograph is typically about 1 kilometer. The complexity of the cracks and ridges tell a story of Europa's past that is mostly undecipherable -- planetary geologists try to understand just the general origin of the overall features. One noteworthy feature is the overall white sheen, possibly indicating the presence of frost. Another is the dark centers between parallel ridges, which might indicate that dirty water from an underground ocean recently welled up in the cracks and froze. Recent research indicates that enough carbon exists to support an underwater biosphere, but that Europa's ice crust may be over three kilometers thick in some places.

🗡 Our country's fishes and how to know them London: Simpkin, Hamilton, Kent & Co., [1902] [Source]
Illustration from 1902 titled "Our country's fishes and how to know them," showing seven different fish species arranged vertically and horizontally. Central is a swordfish with a long, pointed bill, streamlined body, and forked tail. Surrounding it are various other fish, including eel-like fish with long, slender bodies and pronounced teeth, and several shorter, round-bodied fish with detailed scales and fins. Each fish is labeled with a number (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23) for identification. The artwork is detailed, using shades of brown, red, and gray to highlight fins, scales, and anatomical features.

The real solution is collective, not individual: "Based on her study of more than 150 tribal societies, she identified what makes a society or culture “rape prone,” “rape free,” or something between the two.... in rape-free cultures, women have far more authority, status, safety, and freedom."

Think you know Jupiter? In ultraviolet light, it can look like almost another planet. Dark poles, a dark Great Red Spot, one bright oval that fades. #Hubble reveals clouds and hazes the eye cannot see. 📷NASA, ESA, Hubble, Judy Schmidt apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap18101... 🧪🔭⚛️ #planetsci #astronomy
Jupiter sits big and round against black. This is near-ultraviolet, false color.
Bands run across the disk in cyan, pink and muted brown instead of the usual cream and orange. The poles look darker brown with slightly pinkish clues. On the left side of the planet a large storm, the Great Red Spot, is also dark rather than red. Just to its right a smaller oval that would look white in visible light is similarly dark. Farther right a chain of storms, the String of Pearls, stands out bright pink.A small round disk at upper left, off the planet’s limb, is Ganymede.
A thin credit line at lower right reads NASA, ESA, Hubble, Processing: Judy Schmidt.

~800,000 years ago, a giant straight-tusked elephant, Palaeoloxodon antiquus, roamed Europe. It was about twice the size of a modern African elephant: 4 m (13 ft) at the shoulder, weighing ~13 tons. This story is NOT about these towering titans. It's about their ᴛɪɴʏ cousins. (📷: Liam Elward)
A life sized recreation next to a standard waving human silhouette, showing Palaeoxloxodon namadicus, which was slightly larger than Paleoloxodon antiquus but probably didn't enter Europe, being specific to India and parts of Asia.

NASA Astronomy Hourly Picture - 2018-12-02: The Fairy of Eagle Nebula #Astronomy #NASA #Space
The dust sculptures of the Eagle Nebula are evaporating. As powerful starlight whittles away these cool cosmic mountains, the statuesque pillars that remain might be imagined as mythical beasts. Featured here is one of several striking dust pillars of the Eagle Nebula that might be described as a gigantic alien fairy. This fairy, however, is ten light years tall and spews radiation much hotter than common fire. The greater Eagle Nebula, M16, is actually a giant evaporating shell of gas and dust inside of which is a growing cavity filled with a spectacular stellar nursery currently forming an open cluster of stars. This great pillar, which is about 7,000 light years away, will likely evaporate away in about 100,000 years. The featured image in scientifically re-assigned colors was released in 2005 as part of the fifteenth anniversary celebration of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. New: Instagram page features cool images recently submitted to APOD
