Easily my favorite detail:
There was the incident that became known as "the Lauren error": One day, her daughter Lauren, then four years old, was playing with
the command module simulator at the Instrumentation Lab when she somehow activated a pre-launch program, called P01, while the simulator was in midflight — which crashed the simulator altogether. Hamilton created a program add-on in the technical documentation warning users not to launch
P01 during flight. She also proposed a software fix to prevent the error happening during a real mission, but she was overruled on the grounds that the highly trained astronauts were never going to make that same mistake. Yet during the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, that's exactly what happened: Jim Lovell inadvertently launched P01 during the flight, causing the on-flight navigational data to vanish. Hamilton and her team were called in to solve the error, and after that her proposed changes were
integrated into the program.

This seems like a disingenuous claim, including the nurdles not spilt in suggesting that 3/4 of the pellet cargo has been recovered. In fact, around 5 of 17 tonnes has been recovered, about 30%
The amount of pellets being collected has reduced considerably since the incident. Of the 17.92 tonnes of pellets estimated to have entered the River Tyne, 5.14 tonnes had been recovered from the water and beaches as of 23 September. When combined with pellets removed from damaged containers on board BG Orange by the Port before they entered the water, almost three quarters of the original plastic pellet cargo has now been recovered overall.

Historically, measles vaccination reduced mortality more than expected from just reduction in measles, bc getting measles turns out to be bad for a child's immune system more broadly (it partially "clears" existing immune memory). Hopefully we won't see that in reverse now, but... honestly we might.

Yes, although much is still shrouded in secrecy. It is kind of too large a topic for 300 characters. But in brief: 1. the US has had official "pre-delegation" orders at times that allow the military to use nukes under certain circumstances. Whether those exist at all today is unclear.

Tony Meredith @tonymeredith.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
So, I guess the British military have had some independence of thought at times. I'd also guess that Cold War stuff about US tactical nukes, say in Europe, must have been extra scary. "Use it or lose it" must have been worked through in scenarios of a Russian advance with ionospheric disruption. 3/3

Thanks. It's a deliberately murky area. Probably never documented much. As a old civilian, I've only ever met two talking sources about UK civilian command. Old RAF Valiant pilot. Apparently did some radar incursions into USSR. He was very disparaging about politicians. 1/3

Thank you for sharing this scary stuff. And it's all shown as chain of command against ticking seconds. Over here (UK), sealed orders on SLBM subs allowed/allow for action if the chain of command is disrupted or destroyed. Is there much history written about command of US nukes in that scenario?

Quite a remarkable map, table, and diagram from a 1971 report on launch-on-warning, showing the implications of Soviet submarine launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) on detection, reaction, deliberation, and response time. All numbers are in SECONDS, which is what I find the most wild about it.
Map of the USA labeled "Soviet SLBM [Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile] Time of Flight to SAC [Strategic Air Command] Targets." Shows both "nominal" and "depressed" trajectories. Absolute best (north central USA) is between 580 and 850 seconds (9.6 – 14 min). Absolute worst (everywhere else) is between 320 and 650 seconds (5.3 – 10.8 min). The variations are based on where they assume the subs are launching from. Table: "Early Warning System Performance." Shows four different systems (BMEWS, OTHF, SLBM Net, and a not-yet-operational in 1971 Boost-Phase Detection Satellite) that indicates the time of detection after launch (varies between 55 and 150 seconds; BMEWS cannot detect launches as it is only over-the-horizon radar), the time that the US command and control system would be alerted after launch (ranges from 85 seconds for the newest system to 900 seconds for BMEWs), the probably of detection of a single launch (BMEWS is 99%, SLBM Net is 50%, none of the others have probabilities), probably of detection for a mass launch (all around 100%), and their false alarm rate (BMEWS has 1 per 7 years, OTHF is 1 per 6 months, the others are unknown). Diagram: "National Command-Warning to Response Cycle." Shows the consequences of a launch detection all the way through the US nuclear infrastructure, with "delay times" in seconds. Will be discussed in the next post in this thread.
