I.just learned that there is a Steve Jackson (British game designer) who is not the Steve Jackson I know of (American game designer), and that BOTH of them wrote books in the FIGHTING FANTASY role-playing series from the '80s. I feel like this is a very specific prank targeted only at me
THE WARLOCK OF FIRETOP MOUNTAIN, a FIGHTING FANTASY book by Steve Jackson (British) and Ian LivingstoneSCORPION SWAMP, a FIGHTING FANTASY book by Steve Jackson (American) and Ian Livingstone (presumably the same Ian Livingstone as from the other book but I'm afraid to find out)

Once again. Just like the Paramount Merger Gavin Newsom does what he always does. Sells out the working class people for the billionaires again and again. Not only that but endorses a bill that will make it impossible to tax the wealthy at all. www.commondreams.org/news/newsom-...

Cunk on evolutionary psychology: "For example, why do people run to work? You’d think it was to get in some exercise first thing in the morning, but evolutionary psychology says you’re a dick if you think that. It’s a tough science."

STILL READING Philomena Cunk, CUNK ON EVERYTHING. Been going very slowly through this, which is basically how it's designed to be read, a bit at a time between other books. Here's Cunk on dinosaurs.
"There are loads of sorts of dinosaurs, but the main ones are the across ones and the up and down ones. The across ones ate grass, and the up and down ones ate the across ones. It was just like lions and whatever those stripey piano-horses are that lions eat." There's a diagram with a silhouette of a four-legged, brontosaurus-looking dino labelled "Across" and one of a two-legged T. Rex-type labelled "Up and Down"

RECENT READING Cory Doctorow, ENSHITTIFICATION. Very informative and entertaining look at how technology is getting consistently worse, esp. Apple, Amazon, Twitter & Facebook. Sadly it immediately sounds woefully naive about how much worse it would get under Trump, even the update from Jan. 2026

From ENSHITTIFICATION: Cory Doctorow encourages the reader to exercise fair use exception to copyright law. I got the ebook from Libby, which downloads via Amazon, so I guess I'm part of the problem? (Spoiler for the book: the real problem is that everyone and everything is caught in the problem)
Greetings, followers of my reader! This is Cory Doctorow writing to you, and your friend has very nearly finished reading my excellent 2025 book, Enshittification: Why Everything Suddenly Got Worse and What to Do About It, available at finer bookstores everywhere, as well as on monopoly electronic retail sites that should be condemned to the scrap heap of history.)

Obviously this thread is the work of a crazy person. But I AM genuinely curious when the insistence that a book is in fact A NOVEL became so commonplace. It wasn't called THE GODFATHER: THE NOVEL, was it? JAWS: THE NOVEL? JURASSIC PARK: THE NOVEL? Maybe they were and I never noticed until now!
