Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 9hAha ok - no I wasn’t registered (didn’t know you had to be). I didn’t get any email alerts about the conference (plenty about by-election) but I could have incorrect preferences or something). It might be easier than it used to be but it’s still not very easy imo. 010

Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 04/10/2026Eeesh. That’s harsh. Remember that “sold out” is never guaranteed after they first announce it, as baskets expire and failed purchases make tickets available again for a short period of time so never pay any attention to the first message if you’re close. 110
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 02/10/2026It’s a newer (and not that well-supported format) - but essentially it’s not required any more than supporting other bot traffic is, like for search engine optimisation. Perhaps worth considering though, as more generally search engine traffic is going down - but less of a performance consideration. 100
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 02/10/2026You could also look at using llms.txt and directing llm traffic to dedicated markdown versions of pages, with media links within those files linked to the CDN, then heavily cache those resources. Take a look at Lighthouse / Page Speed insights for more ways at improving page load. 130
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 02/10/2026Another way to speed up your site would be to remove PHP overhead altogether. Run your CMS on a private server, then sync its generated pages as plain HTML files to your live server. Plain HTML files = super fast. 120
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 02/10/2026I think one of the biggest performance improvements you could make would be shifting all your media to a dedicated CDN (with asset resizing ideally). That way, crawlers can grab your media all they like but it won’t affect your servers overhead. 140

Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 14/09/2026It’s fulfilling a multigenerational promise my dad made for a treehouse that never was, so it’s also a chapter closed ❤️ 010
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 14/09/2026Hehe, it’s a tricksy angle - but it’s relatively small. A nature pond! It’s a warm up for when we make our natural swimming pool. The treehouse is fun! It’s half built with leftover materials from the renovation, which means it’s insulated! Got lights too, with a nice little battery+solar unit. 100
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 14/09/2026Summer achievements: Surviving the summer holidays. Also, building a treehouse for the kids. And more recently, digging a pond and (about to) build some ground mounts for solar. I’m excited to get the solar in. Something I’ve been waiting for since - I don’t know when. We will be all but off grid. 230

Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 08/09/2026There was quite a funny LBC phone-in recently where Lewis Goodall floated the idea of a 100% inheritance tax (to much outrage). Sounds bonkers but there is a lot to like about it. No multi-generational hoarding, more spending better for the economy. More people starting out on an even footing. 120
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 08/09/2026Because they are able to create that wealth through means other than a simple salary, which are not taxed in the same way - and that is the point of unfairness people get so worked up about. 000
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 08/09/2026The main issue with individuals and those with a high net worth is that the tax system doesn’t work for them. Yes they pay tax and it can be “a lot” (to us mere mortals—but the percentage of the amount they make which is paid as tax is not higher or equal to that of those who earn make much less 210
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 08/09/2026We absolutely need to sort out corporate tax fraud - Amazon, Starbucks so many more all do it - with overseas parent companies and loan arrangements etc (whilst also receiving separate tax breaks and subsidies). 110
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 08/09/2026It was a little inflammatory, but in general I do think that an exit tax is something we could consider as a country, especially post-Brexit. Like US, Australia, Japan, Germany, France and others do. 110

Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 03/09/2026They do have around 17% of the world's population and are estimated to manufacture 28% of everything, so the numbers are not wild, in that many countries are exporting their carbon footprint to China through the purchase of goods (many essential) made there. 100
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 03/09/2026I don’t disagree. But that feels a little disingenuous. What about comparing it to Qutar or any other petro state? They have far higher per-capita emissions. And China makes all our stuff. They’re also building renewables faster than any other country - supporting other countries in the process. 100
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 27/08/2026I have seen a few of these. There’s one called One Sec, another Stop Socials - and a hardware based one called Brick. In the light of these Meta lawsuits one can hope that their days are numbered?! (Fat chance… but regulation is badly needed). 110

Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 13/08/2026What are you on about? I never said I was against solar. I was just pointing out that it’s just a bit more nuanced than saying “solar is always good, anyone who opposes it ever = bad”. 100
Tom Kiss @tomkiss.net · 13/08/2026So you’d expect any solar installation at all to get approval from any Green Party councillor, anywhere? That’s absurd. Just because something is a solar development, it doesn’t mean it’s being proposed in an appropriate place or at the right time. 220
